Having back surgery what are my chances of a successful surgery?

My husband is having back surgery. Lower back-ruptured disk that is sitting on a pack of nerves. Many, many people have said it doesn't help. Should he go ahead and have the surgery in hopes it helps him or cancel it. Please I need some answers from someone who may have had this surgery before. This is a 3 year old injury and shots will only be a waste of money and time. Physical Therapy didn't work.

  1. My dad had a herniated disk in his lower back as well. I would go for a second opinion. He fully recovered after some shots (I forget what they call them)...There are different methods of treatment. Once again, go for a second opinion.
  2. ...i don't know, if what your doctor said trust them ...get well soon if you're going to surgery (husband)
  3. I had a ruptured disk at the base of my neck that was pinching a nerve causing me pain and numbness from just below my left ear to the tips of the fingers on my left hand. My doctor removed the disk and replaced it with a wedge of bone removed from my hip. I was in a servical collar for about 7 weeks, but when I finally got out and was able to work out again, I was kicking myself for not doing it sooner. That was a year and a half ago and I am completely pain free and have almost total range of movement in my neck. It's just a little stiff sometimes. Take it for what it's worth, but I'm very glad I had it done. Note that this was after epidural blocks and physical therapy failed to provide any relief.
  4. .i have had the op and it changed my life .Pain free. a must is do what the doctor says to the tee. Walk ever day .Don't let him do a thing for 3 mths no bending or lifting, most important. 5 years now since op and slight pain in leg,Good luck
  5. My grandpa had what sounds like the exact same kind of surgery last week. It went fine, but the doctor said that for the first year the patients hate him, and then afterward they feel it was worth it. If you do the surgery, try and schedule it to be the second or third surgery of the day. You want the doctor to be warmed up, but not tired out. Good luck!
  6. I guess it depends on what type of help you are looking for. Do you want him completely pain free? That would be nice but it's not very likley. My husband has been through 6 back operations. 4 were ruptured disc's 1 was bone fragments and 1 was a bone fusion. Completey pain free would be so wonderful but we both know it's not likley. On the other hand, the pain he does have is not anywhere close to the pain he had BEFORE surgery. He's learned over the years to put up with it. He gets pain meds that do a little but not a lot. And after any injury or surgery, you are more likely to get arthriits. It's been 24 years now for him. Praying for you husband. And for you! I know what it's like to watch someone you love go through all that pain and fear.
  7. Get him some Tahitian Noni Juice. It was a miracle for me!!
