Ideas for some low-impact very effective exercises for someone who has had extensive foot surgery?
My fiance's heel was shattered about 2 years ago in an accident. He walks with a limp and often has minor achy pain in his foot. The doctor says he has post traumatic arthritis, meaning he has no cartilege and bone is grinding on bone, causing the pain. He walks with a limp and is fine except he can't run or jump. Does anyone have ideas for low-impact exercises? I know he needs physical therapy, but we cant afford that seeing as how we have about 100k in medical bills... please help! I dont want him to use this as an excuse to let himself go.

- Maybe he could try swimming and/or aquatic exercises. It is possible to get a REALLY good workout and never inflict any real force on the heel itself.
- Tell him to go swimming that is a low impact as you can get and still move the foot, with out putting any more stress on it. Plus it should feel good to him. Good luck!

Next thnk things out. You know for ten years I was too poor to afford a doctor visit and did not qualify for any sort of government sponsored or other health insuarance. So I had to do somethign strange. I had to go to a medical library and strart with basic reference books and read and study looking for things that reveqled wht the symptoms I had were probably cxaused by then I woudl look for alterntive way to treqwt them becasue I could not get a prescription and could not afford to buy them. I was my own doctor and was very caqreful. But I was able to fix a lot of problems. there was a doctor I knew through the born again prayer fellowshiop I was in and he ( if I didi al that work A) would sit witn me in his home and let me tell him what I had reqad and learned and give him an idea whaqt it was and then he woudl tgellme iof I was right or wroing and he charged me $2 a visit sort of lik ethe old fashioned days. And in the rpcess I read what is now clese to 120 books on health and nutrition and how to deal with ailments. God has allowed me to pich many ideas up. i CAN tell you something thgt I am aware of that probably very few other humaqn beings are aware of just becasiue of the directino I was coming form in that library. IT WAS a part of a university medical center and was a top notch place. Each and every day that library got in new stuff. New findings and the results of medical studies form around the world. think of haw many reserach hospitals ther are and think how each one has students and professors studying new things and think about how every day there re prablably about 17 New York size telephone books of new innformatino coming out tellin gus all sorts of things about health and treatment. then I realized that ther was no longer wnyone who new enough to know everything that one would need to know to be able to yuse the newest and the best information. But the point is that I wasn able to help myself by being open minded and looking in the right places. certainly there are books that will tellyou the sorts of theraopy that your husband needs and if you took two days you could find them and know what they are qnd another two days you could learn them and learn how to helphim do them. You migfht hire a therpist to sit down wth you once and show you how to do them too. Then do them alone on you rown. Or hire a kid in the neighborhood who ios mature and responsible ( there aare many especilly eight and ten year old kios who would help. To help him do them. Some times you need tht sort of motivation. but dothem with out the cost of the therapist then in eight weeks or ten hire the therapist again to lket you know how in their opinion he is doing of course if he does it right he will probably know. There are great ways to deal with pain other than the ways doctors knowof or woudl recomend. one way to have low impqct excersizes is to keep the feet off of the floor and not ahve any impacts. Also sitting down rather than standing up excersize the feet. move them gently twist them get full motion.
