Considering surgery on my flat foot?
My left foot is completely flat and my right foot has a slight arch. I have problems standing for long periods of time because of immense pain in the bottom of my foot. It even causes me to limp slightly. I'm considering surgery on the foot and I need detail on what to expect, what I should do.....everything. Can anyone recommend good shoes (specifics)? Any other kind of help would be great.

- i went to the foot dr he took molds of my feet. gave me inserts to wear . at first it hurt for awile but a year our so later my feet where normal
- Surgery is not the answer for a flat foot. Do not, I repeat, do not have surgery unless you have exhausted every other option. I would try some custom made orthotics from a doc or physical therapist that uses Sole Supports. They are the best custom orthotics on the market. Do not go to Good Feet. You will pay for something that is not custom but claims to be. Their web page is www.solesupports.com I have used them in my clinic for 2+ years and have had great results. Good luck and stay away from foot surgery if possible.
- I highly recommend seeing a podiatrist and having custom orthotics (arch supports) made. By using orthotics, you may be able to reverse any effects you've had (like the limp) and get rid of the pain. You will be instructed to wear them constantly for up to 6 months to see if there is any improvement. If not, the surgery is fairly easy - I had it done on both feet at the same time. The surgery I had was a plantar faciaectomy, where the ligament is severed and left to grow new connective tissue that will be more "elastic" than the stretched out ligament. I was out of work for about 10 days, and honestly, the recovery took about a year before the pain was gone...but well worth it! That was 10 years ago, and I still have to wear the orthotics to maintain the arch, but I don;t have the pain, or the limp, or the bachaches from the limp! Recommendation on shoes - I found that Reebok makes a shoe called a DMX - it has air chambers in the toe and heel that keep the pressure off of the heel and has support in the right places. My doctor also told me not to wear flats but try to find shoes with a slight heel. Of all things, my "cowboy boots" were the most comfortable and took the pressure off of the arch. I also wear ladies oxfords because they provide the same support.
