Is it okay for me to have weight loss surgery?

I am 15 years old and weigh 311 pounds, my height is 5' 10 I have tried dieting, and it is working. but I just get soo impatient!!! I never want to go to school and I suffer from Major Depression Disorder and Social Anxiety and some blood pressure disorder which im not being treated for. I wanted to know if it is okay for me to atleast have a lap band surgery? Some doctors say its okay but others say its not, if I can what site can I go to to find a specific doctor? No people! im not talking about bypass surgery, im talking about the LAP BAND surgery Nothing is being cut, only a special band is being place on my stomach. My mom says she supports me if I go throught it. I also already lost 14 pounds since February, but I get soo frustrated!! it seems like its soo little loss, and I don't even notice a change in my pants, yes they feel looser, but my t-shirt size is sooo frustrating! I already tried killing myself 3 times,

  1. That surgery is difficult to recover from, and should only be a last resort. Yes, losing weight is slow, but remember, you didn't gain all that weight overnight, and you cannot lose it overnight! Continue to eat healthy food and lose that weight! And as you go along, you can work on your other issues. Good luck!
  2. It is okay to have this surgery but only when nothing else is working. Remember you are going to have part of your stomach clipped and that is not natural. You may have to take lifelong supplements like Iron and Vitamins as their absorption may be affected. You may also have to change your eating habbits. It always works but there is a price to pay and you also have to go through the risks of a surgery.
  3. You are asking the wrong people. What do your parents think? Diet AND exercise could help. If it were me, I would not do it, I would rather develop a healthy lifestyle and commit to it.
  4. You will still have to diet and the diet after one of those surgeries sucks. What you need is exercise. Lack of exercise is causing your mental instability and depression. Start taking a vitamin and find an activity that you love. Try roller skating!! Its great exercise that's addictive! Its like flying! I know its hard to get started but you need to. It will take a while to feel the benefit but don't give up. Your body needs exercise like it needs food, water and sleep. Without it your body breaks down. Build some muscle and the weight will come off easier. I promise. Don't put your self through such a dangerous and unnecessary proceedure. You will be miserable. Just get a little more active. Do more, eat less, that is the only way to loose weight without surgery. No it will not happen over night. But if you want to live a long happy life you need to get started. Start now when your young, its even harder when you get older. You will have to completely get rid of fast food and sodas from your diet. Soda is causing America to have diabetes. High fructose corn syrup is toxic, too much for too long and your body responds with diabeties. You do have a choice. You are in control. Make up your mind to get healthy and get to work. You may thank me one day. It feels good to sweat and be tired from a work out. There is no better stress reliever than that, I promise.
  5. Is there a camp or something you can go to for losing weight? Surgery should be a last resort, but I can understand your health is at risk. If you do have surgery make sure it is reversible. Some gastric surgeries create more health problems than they solve. And make sure you have an ethical doctor who isn't just doing surgeries for the money (it's a lucrative field). I, personally, would either look for a camp or live in clinic to lose weight, or get a personal coach. (can't cost more than the surgery). You'll learn more, stay healthier longer, and have fewer long-lasting/lifetime side effects. One other thought is to check with these TV shows that pay YOU to be in a program. Or write Oprah, In the meantime, you are off to a good start by dieting and realizing you need help. You might even check out Overeaters Anonymous. Another thing you might do is see an endocrinologist and see if it is a glandular problem that caused you to gain weight to this degree. I admire your courage. Do get someone to treat your blood pressure too. Losing weight will help WHEN you do (not IF), but you don't want to let the high blood pressure go too long. Even young people have strokes and heart attacks. I think you'll find it easier to deal with Depression and Social Anxiety when you get your physical problems behind you. So that is one more thing, get some counseling to help you through all this. Are your parents committed to helping you? If not, find a friend, relative, or adult that is. Best of luck, and I know you can do it. Take care!
  6. Hey you really seem firm on the idea of the lap band. Well this info gives you info on the lap band too. PS, look at obesityhelp.com, that will tell you where to find a good doctor. By the way, I did really well with the gastric bypass. Keep your chin up :) I had gastric bypass surgery in April 2005. I started out at 268, now I’m 180 and holding. These links will help you in many ways to make a decision if this is for you or not. I vote yes, because it made such a difference in my life. I was taking 8 pills a day, and after my surgery, I lost my diabetes. The way they do the surgery, takes your diabetes away. I no longer have to take glucophage, and I no longer have high Cholesterol or high blood pressure. I’m down to 2 pills a day. I went from a size 26-28 to a 16-18. http://obesityhelp.com/member/rjpoole/ Most people struggle with paying for the surgery. Go to this site, it is a great support system for you, because it’s only people who have had gastric bypass or lap band. Every insurance program has been rated, and you’ll get tips on how to deal with your insurance company, as well as, surgery tips, food tips, and just support. This site is free! I’d have to rate it a #1 site if you want to learn about the surgery and how to deal with the insurance companies and get support from other people in the same boat as you. This is the #1 site for gastric bypass and it’s free! Extremely helpful! http://www.obesityhelp.com/ This explains about the surgery: http://win.niddk.nih.gov/publications/gastric.htm I really researched my surgeon, and I made a wise choice. Always get a surgeon that has done at least 200 of these surgeries. Get someone with a lot of experience, and you will do well. Here’s all about my surgeon… http://obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/bariatric+surgeon+profile+James+Pilkington+djp.html http://www.cmch.org/profile-pilkington.html You just can’t find a better surgeon than him! He’s probably done at least 500 of the surgeries, so far. I did so well after my surgery, I thank him every time I see him. I made it to 175! It's been almost 2 years since my surgery. I haven't had any complications at all with my surgery! My health has been very good, and I've lost the weight nice and slow, so my body doesn't look that much out of shape. I've been faithfully taking my vitamins, and my blood work came back excellent! I still think very highly of Dr. Pilkington, and would recommend to anyone thinking of this surgery, to have Dr. Pilkington as his or her surgeon. I'm walking proof, that he is an excellent doctor. I just spoke to another patient of his who told me she had a very good experience with him, and she is in excellent health, as well. He is a very caring doctor. I live in Florida in the winter. I see alot of folks down there because of my job, and I see people from all over the USA and overseas. Since my surgery, I've talked to lots of others that have had the surgery in Florida, and some of them didn't do as well, and I tend to think it's because their doctors weren’t as competent as mine. I feel that part of how you do, is because of your general health and attitude. The other major part is how good your doctor is. 7. Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass and lap band surgery have become very common and very safe now. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges Obesity surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Fly2india4health Consultants. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. I have also read that they arrange financing for international patients, as all surgery is not covered by insurance or by the stinking NHS. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of Healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star. My cousin got her Obesity surgery done there and she is more than very happy with the results. She is all praise for Fly2india4health Consultants. She paid just 20% of the cost what she was quoted in USA and it was like a wonderful vacation for her. Hope this helps Source(s): http://www.fly2india4health.com
