  1. Go to an online encyclopedia and look up Dr. Christian Barnard.
  2. CABG = coronary artery bypass graft, often called open heart surgery. http://www.transonic.com/on_vs__off_pump.shtml http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronary_artery_bypass_surgery -- make sure to look up some of the external links at the bottom of the page, they're really good. Other things you might want to look at: use of saphenous vein vs LIMA/RIMA (left/right internal mammary), microvascular techniques, pharmacology (inotropes/chronotropes), better aseptic techniques, better management of post-surgical complications. I hope that helps. If you have the time or the inclination, look up a "Batista Procedure", and find one of the great failings of modern medicine. It's a wonder it was ever performed, and has absolutely dismal mortality rates. Yet for a while, it was the hottest new trend in medicine. Scary.
  3. Don't forget Dr. Blalock and Vivian Thomas http://www.medicalarchives.jhmi.edu/blbio.htm They even did a great HBO movie about their story.
