Lets get a few FACTS straight -Daniel Hale Williams was biracial, so he was as much white as he was black even though he mostly claimed black over white. -He didnt actually perform open heart surgery. Surgery to the pericardium is not open heart surgery (open chest, yes; open heart, no). It is like saying you tied your foot when you actually tied your shoe which encased your foot. -The first true heart surgery was done by a German doctor, Ludwig Rehn. And surgery to the pericardium, which is what Williams did, was done earlier by a Spanish doctor, Francisco Romero (treated pericardial effusion in 1801) and the surgeon of Napoleon's army, Dominique Larrey. Another American surgeon, Henry Dalton in St. Louis performed the same surgery (and, ironically, on a black stabbing victim) as Williams 2 years earlier, with both patients recovering. -Be proud of what he was able to do for the black community (two nursing schools for black nurses, the first integrated hospital, and serving by Grover Cleveland as the Chief of surgery of Freedman's Hospital), rather than being proud of urban legends. Being credited with is not the same as actually doing. Edit: Just so everyone knows. I gave nothing but facts (no opinions except for the foot/shoe thing) in my answer from my own medical school experiences and my own research, so if you feel the need to give me a thumbsdown rating, you are simply showing your own ignorance and inability to do simple research. It also shows how quick you are to discount someone who actually is not blinded by propaganda. I did not downgrade what Dr. Williams did, and I pointed out some facts that most black people dont know and would appreciate. I dont care what color you are. As a medical student, Dr. Williams has done more for me than for most black people, and I knew his importance before Black History Month decided to showcase it. So just because I'm white and not a moron that believes everything I hear does not mean I'm not right. Daniel Hale Williams was not the first surgeon to perform open heart surgery. That is simply wrong. Maybe the first black surgeon, but he wasnt even the first american to perform pericardial surgery. Its like talking to a bunch of 5 year olds when ignorant people get something in their heads. I guess I'll try drawing pictures next time.

4. yeah guys...most of the world knows that Dr. Williams did not perform the first open heart surgery. If you define open heart surgery as surgery on the actual heart, Williams did not do that. When he was performing the surgery, he noticed a small nick on the heart from the knife but decided to let it heal on its own because he didnt want to subject the heart to any more trauma. And because it had not been done before. If you define open heart surgery as surgery to the pericardium, Williams was not the first person or even the first American to do it. Nearly 100 years earlier, Romero and Larrey were doing it successfully, on and off the battle fields. Larrey even did it so often that he learned from his own mistakes and developed better methods, which were probably the ones that Williams and Dalton used when they treated their stab victims. So, um, no it was not a black man who performed the first heart surgery, unless Romero or Larrey were black.
