Has anyone experienced nerve pain to left back and arm after open heart surgery. What to do to relieve pain??

My mother had open heart surgery in December 05 and has been experienceing pain in her left hand and back. The pain is so intense at times and she cannot find anyhting to help. The physician has had her on pain meds, Lyrica (for nerve pain), and holistc medicine. Any advice or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

  1. If it is indeed nerve pain, than I would suggest that she sees a neurologist.
  2. i dont think its nerve pain..she might be having sternocardia..hypoxic damage of the myocardia..due to stress or overwork fo the heart..my suggestion is to consult the doctor, preferbly a cardiologist..most likely he would prescribe Nittoglycerin or nitrates sublingual doses..it will dilate the coronary vessels and reduce the pain from the ischemic injury of the heart..
  3. This is common problem for people who have had a CABG(Bypass surgery). It has to do with the positioning of the patient when they are having surgery and when the surgeon uses the the rib spreaders. Use your prescribed pain medications and the nerve pain should go away after about a month. I know it sounds like a long time but that is about all you can do for it.
  4. You should see a good pain specialist doctor. Try Dr.Sanjay Gupta in Philadephia.I think the number is 6102027483
