- Dr. Daniel Hale Williams. Died in the year of 1931. On August 4, 1893, He became the first african american to perform an open heart surgery, and also the first surgeon to open the chest cavity sucessfully without the patient dying of an infection. He was appointed as chief surgeon at the Freedmens's Hospital in Washington, D.C. and reorganized the hospital medical and surgical departments. He established an intership program and a biracial staff of excellent doctors and nurses.

At the time he did not even have an MD, he was working with a prestigous cardiosurgeon at the time. not only was he the first to perform this type of surgery but he was responsible for this becomming such a wide spread operation.... it was believed to be impossible to operate on the heart before his work.
