Will Gastric Bypass Surgery work for someone who is a compulsive over eater?

My friend is over 400 lbs. She has tried all types of diets and commercial weight loss plans offered by Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. The most weight she's ever been able to lose is 25 - 40 lbs but she has never kept the weight off. She is a compulsive/emotional over eater and hates all forms of exercise. At 400 + lbs I doubt the traditional diet and exercise routine will work for her anyway because that doesn't address her underlying issues with food. Would gastric bypass surgery with a combination of psychotherapy be a viable option?

  1. Probably not, Only her doctor can tell her if it would work. She has no desire or determination to stop eating, so it would not be good for her. And who knows if her doctor did the surgery, will she have the desire to keep the weight off? She has to prove to her doctor that she really wants the surgery and is willing to do everything to keep with in the guidelines of it. If she starts eating after the surgery, she will gain it all back anyway. She should get some counseling first to see why she overeats. Then consider surgery some time later.
  2. Gastric bypass and psychotherapy should work for her, but they will fail over time if she does not practice portion control. If she has the surgery but then "grazes" all day, she can still take in excess calories. If she were to combine this with no exercise, her weight would just go back up, even with the surgery. So she has to truly commit to a change in lifestyle and conquer whatever makes her eat compulsively.
  3. Absolutely not. It is very easy to stretch the pouch...very easy. If she overeats, than the whole point of the surgery is down the tubes. Plus, excercise is a MUST. You have to move after the sugery. You have to have a psychological eval prior to surgery...she would not pass. She needs much more help than surgery. She needs psychological help FIRST then she can explore surgical options
