Roughly, how long is the recovery time for an infant, 2 months of age, after having open heart surgery?

My daughter has a large, 5 mm VSD that will be closed very soon. They can't do this laproscopically, so they will have to open her up. I am hopeful that she will be able to be home for Christmas, so I was wondering what others experiences were in similar situations.

  1. it depends on the surgery, but about 5-7 weeks. i read a story that an infant had an in-depth heart surgery, and it took quite some time to heal.
  2. hi my son was 7 months when he had his open heart surgery, we were told he would be for 2 weeks but he was only in for a week. it mainly depends on what is wrong with her to begin with and how she recovers afterwards. hope all goes well and he/she recovers quickly!!!
  3. Our youngest child had surgery for ASD and VSD at three months of age. She was in the hospital for a week and came home from the hospital doing very well but she was still weak and not really completely recovered until she was around 9 to 12 months old. It really depends on the child and the reason for the surgery.
