What are the negative/positive side effects of weight-loss surgery?
Please tell me what type of surgery you had (band, gastric bypass, etc.), plus the pros and cons, if you would. I would be so grateful! Thank you =)

- Well, for one thing, it requires local anesthetics and it's surgery! Many procedures require proof of an attempt for so long of weight loss before you're able to be approved. Then, your insurance may cover most of it but decide right before you go under that they can't cover you. Kind of giving you false hope. I work under many Nurse Practitioners and constantly hear patients tell them that they were gaining weight just to get the lap band... Makes NO sense... and then the FNP write an RX for diet pills because its less risk when monitored every month. But I know someone who went through weight loss surgery and after 4 years, she*s back to her old size. Nothing will work without exercise, eating right, and perseverance no matter what route you go. Kinda sad but there is no proof of lipo or any surgery reducing the risk of heart disease from fat [mostly from the mid section].
- The positive effects are that you shed the pounds very quickly, as they are removied right from you. The negative effects, as any aurgery has, are the adhesions that form shortly afterwards.
- Here is a web site that compares them side by side. I had lap band and very happy with it and so far it is only positive for me. I am down 60 pounds and lots of inches. I have never had any problems from the beginning. I never took pain medications and I could drive the day after surgery. The negative side is that you can't tell just anyone without them saying you took the easy way out. http://health.ucsd.edu/specialties/lapband/about/options.htm Hope this answers your questions.
- While I have personally never had weight loss surgery, I can help you with the biggest con I believe. It would be a pointless surgery that is likely to make you an even more unhealthy person when you could have naturally dropped the weight, and felt even better about yourself.
