What should I get for my boss just after his mother has had open heart surgery? Flowers?

My boss has been out of town on family medical leave for 8 days because his mother had open heart surgery. I know that she has been having complications and would like to get him something when he returns in three days. Are flowers appropriate for this kind of thing? If so, what kind would you recommend? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

1. honestly, i think a note or a phone call letting him know you are thinking of him is more appropriate.

7. buying your boss gifts, regardless of the situation, can look inappropriate. get your coworkers to go in with you if you feel the need to buy him something. i wouldn't buy him anything, but maybe a card.
