When is it time for bunion surgery and how long is the recovery?
I have lived with a bunion on my left foot for many years. Recently it has become increasingly uncomfortable, sometimes painful. I still jog on the treadmill and walk alright, but I know it will only worsen. Is surgery something I should do now, or later? How long is the recovery time before I can work, seated, and how long before I can work, standing? How long before I can jog and do everything else?

- Bunion is a progressive tilting of the first metatarsal. It can worsen gradually with even ordinary daily walking and there is not yet any proven method to stop or correct the deformity. Wearing doctor-prescribed foot orthotics or shop inserts for bunion protection can help alleviate symptoms but canot solve the problem. Surgery will only consider when pain affects walking and is not relieved by other forms of treatment. When you consider surgery, please kindly understand the complication and side effect of the surgery and most of them will affect the normal activities after surgery as most of them involve some bone-breaking process. - It varies from each person's will to recover and age. A friend of mine, did it when she was 55. She actually had surgery on both feet at different times. She told me, although it was painful, it was annoying that only after 6 month, she got rid of the pain completely. She would do it again if she had to.
