Post gallbladder removal diarrhea and pain around the naval?
I am now 5 weeks post gallbladder removal. With 3 incicions. They also repaired a hernia that they found when doing the gallbladder surgery. I have diarrhea several times a day, worse in mornings, and also pain around the naval that is intermittent. Anyone else have these symptoms?

- The pain in your umbilical (navel) area is definately from the umbilical hernia repair they did during your laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. You didn't say whether it was laparoscopic or not; I'm only guessing, considering they found and repaired an umbilical hernia, which are very commonly found during laparoscopic cases. I work for a general surgeon and lap chole's are our #1 surgery performed; and at least 1/2 of our patients probably have an umbilical hernia repair at the same time. That repair can be pretty painful post-op; so be patient. Remember that the surgeon used heavy suture to pull that defect in your fascia back together and hold it in place. I highly doubt he used mesh. If you still are experiencing pain after another week or so; give your surgeon another call and let him re-examine you just for a double check to make sure all is healing well. As far as the diarrhea; it WILL eventually subside. Some people experience very little, if any, after their gallbladder sugery. Others experience pretty significant diarrhea for many weeks or months. I know this from experiencing this surgery myself as well. I have trouble with irritable bowel in the first place; so for me, the diarrhea took about 3 months to completely go away. That was many years ago; absolutely no problems now. Your body will adjust in time. Remember that your gallbladder used to "store" the bile your digestive system needed when you ate, and release it as needed. Now, it gets slowly "dripped" into your system constantly. Give it time...you'll be fine! Good luck!!!! And good health.
