I would like to about a lens exchange after a cataract surgery?
My husbands lens was not strong enough and they want to do a lens exchange. Is that pretty common?

- This would be an excellent question at the Cataract Free America patient forum. http://www.cataractfreeamerica.org/Ask-Cataract-Expert/ It sounds like your husband's doctor calculated the power needed for your husband's intraocular lens (IOL) a little too low. While not exactly common, this does happen. Sometimes the preoperative measurements are a bit off or the lens placement makes changes. There are usually at least these options available. 1) Wear glasses or contacts. 2) Lasik or similar laser vision correction surgery. 3) A phakic intraocular lens (P-IOL) as a "helper lens". 4) A "piggy back" lens to give your husband's current IOL a boost. 5) Lens exchange. These are in order from least invasive to most invasive. You and your husband will want to exercise the same care and concern in the decision about exchange surgery as you did in the intial surgery, perhaps even more. Unless the error is large, the exchange is elective and you have more alternatives than with a cataract. You will also want to discuss with your husband's doctor each of these options and understand which is most appropriate for your husband's needs.
