What does a genetic screening ultrasound entail?
I have a genetic counseling appointment tomorrow at a big hospital out of state. I am almost 19 weeks pregnant, and they are concerned about my family history of heart defects. Because I had to have open heart surgery as well as a diaphragmatic hernia repaired at birth. My OB didn't really go into any depth on what they will do at this appointment, aside from look at all of the babies organs on an ultrasound. What all do they do at genetic counseling appointments? I'm getting pretty nervous! My quad test came back fine last week..

- I had a genetic screening and ultrasound with my second child because the tests came back positive for spina bifida. It is really quite simple. They will do an ultrasound that is is longer than your typical one where they really look at the location and size of the organs. The genetic counseling part is simply them asking you tons of quetions about you and your mates family medical history. You need to call both your Mothers and just ask them about any ailments any grandparents have had. It will be a piece of cake, don't worry.
- Well what they did at my apointment was talk i already had my baby. They just asked about my and my husbands family background. everything about our family. The posibilities and chances of having a baby with the same condition. What will happen next, how her life would be. What we could do about it.
- I'm in the same boat as you. I'm almost 19 weeks and my Prenatal Diagnosis ultrasound is on October 7th. My son was born with a heart defect so they are sending me to make sure this baby is okay. My doctor told me that it is a 4D ultrasound and that they will check EVERYTHING on the baby. I'm sure everything will be fine for both of us. We caught my sons heart defect while i was pregnant so if there is a problem i can tell you from experience it is WAY better to know before the baby is born. That way you have a plan and you know what to do and what doctors the baby needs to see. Good luck with everything. Send me a message after your scan and let me know how it went. lindymchenry@yahoo.com =0)
