My 10 year old son injured his quad after a knee injury. Help, PLEASE!!?

My son who was 9 at the time was injured in a soccer game in Jan. he was kicked in the side of the knee and it went inward, then he fell and it hyper-extended. One doc said he had a femur fracture at the knee, and was ok with him being on prescription pain meds for over 1 month. We switched docs and the new doc said there was never a fracture. After MRI's they thought his meniscus was torn. Arthroscopic surgery found scar tissue had formed where the bone had bled and the doc cleaned it up. He never had any rehab and after 6 months of no activity, castings, surgery and limited use he is really out of shape. Fall soccer season just started and he pulled his Quad last night at practice. I massaged it with BioFreeze and gave Advil last night and this morning. Is this a result of everything else? Should I take him back to the doc and insist on PT? I don't want to over react, but he has gone from being the fastest kid on the team to the slowest and he walks and runs with a little hitch now. Any suggestions as to what can be going on?

  1. Sounds like he's not ready for soccer yet since he had no PT and the muscles are out of shape. I would go back to the doctor and insist that he get some PT before going out for soccer.
  2. hi mom; After his first injury , therapy was a must, plus! your doc should have percribe a knee brace, all becuase he a sporty dude. If he had a quad pull. It come back to the firt injury. Was not ready for the sport he was playing. If he lost muscle tone,, then he has to excercise the part to make it stronger. GOOD LUKE
  3. well for a fact he prob could use some Physical therapy It is really helpful and will make things easier on him in the future.
  4. He really needs to get some PT, if as you say they found scar tissue in the knee this can re-occur. PT is the best way to get the leg mobile again and to get the other muscles working that won't have been firing properly for a long time now and he could have some muscle wastage. The PT can give him exercises to build up his muscles as his quad is probably so week its susceptible now to injury. PT can also prevent the re-formation of scar tissue (arthrofibrosis) - if this comes back it can be very tricky to get rid of - I know as i have a scar tissue problem in my knee and am due to have my 4th surgery soon for it.
