Having cataracts removed tomorrow I'm getting very nervous as it draws near. Can anyone help me calm down . ?

Thanks to you all, it makes it too hard to choose a best answer so I will leave it to providence.

  1. HI and one thing that you could do is think about how much this will help you. Another way to relax is deep breathing exercises. Get in a comfortable position, usually sitting down, cross legged and make sure that your back is straight and then slowly take in deep breathes making sure that when you inhale, you fill up your lungs and the expel your breathe slowly, emptying your lungs. Keep doing this and soon you will find that nothing bothers you. If I have not explained this well, you could try to google deep breathing and find out from them. You have my best wishes for your operation and my prayers for your health. Stay calm!
  2. The best thing to do when anxious is to put your mind onto something else. Set a goal for yourself to achieve in the time period and work hard on it so that you do not allow your mind to wonder and think about the event. If this still doesn't work and you're really worked up you can take "rescue" drops or pills which help to calm you.
  3. Do some breathing exercises or keep your mind busy. I wish you the best of luck. Stay calm and hope your eyes fully recover.
  4. Can I reassure you on this matter? You don't even have to get undressed for it--it's less scary than the dentists. You will have drops put in your eye at varying intervals which will not only dilate your pupil but anaesthetise your eye. You can read a book till it gets too blurred. You put a hospital gown on and (probably) walk into the operating theatre-lie on a stretcher--focus on looking at a light and feel only a bit of pressure sometimes as the surgeon operates . Painless! Over in about 30 mins. You don't see what's going on as your face is shielded with a dressing towel! You get drops to put in your eye when you leave and you can SEE! I assure you I was petrified as I thought I knew what was coming having assisted in theatre at cataract operations many years ago,but it really was a doddle.Nothing like I'd imagined. You will be "over the moon" as they say when you see the lovely colour of the trees, sky, flowers etc. I don't even need specs for driving now-only reading ones. Best wishes.
