surgery next week--- anesthesia question?
I am having foot surgery next week to remove a pinched nerve in my foot. Doctor mentioned to me that I will have an IV that will make me feel like I'm in "lala land". I was wondering what kind of anesthesia this sounds like and what I will probably feel like during and after the surgery. I'm scared bc sometimes I hear in the news about people dying from simple surgeries (hernia, cosmetic surgeries) from the anesthesia.

- You gotta get it fixed! Don't worry! What you mentioned is very uncommon.... Also...do not watch that movie "awake" until after your operation.
- I know how you feel. Im panicking about having my tonsils removed. I'm really scared. I'm trying not to think about it too much. If you are having it by IV then you should be completely asleep and you won't feel a thing. I have been told that pre-op is the worst. Trust your doctors. They know what they are doing. I'm sure it will all go fine and you will be awake in recovery in no time. Best wishes.
- ok well it sounds like you wont be asleep your not going to feel anything but you well here it all ask if you can bring headphones or get ear plug cause alot of people panic just from the sound... after the surgery you will be sore for like two maybe three week but that normal cause your body needs time to heal..
- You have nothing to worry about. The "lala land" stuff is not the anesthetic. It's a 'feel good' downer like Vallium or Secanol(reds) that they give you before the operating room. Then you won't care what happens. They'll do the anesthesia in the operating room . You'll be asleep in 2 or 3 seconds and wake up in what seems like a second later. No dreams. Piece of cake. Best wishes.
- Sounds like you will be having sedation and not general anesthesia. Not everyone goes to sleep for surgery - we have a variety of techniques we can use. If you have sedation, your surgeon will numb the area where s/he is working. You'll feel movement and pressure, but no pain. For surgery, it is possible to numb the foot with an ankle block, or inject local anesthesia into the area where the surgery is being done. It depends on the surgery. You could also have a spinal (best anesthetic EVER). If you're otherwise healthy, your chance of dying is extraordinarily small (that's why it makes the news - the millions of people who do well aren't newsworthy). It's more dangerous to drive to the hospital than to have anesthesia. You'll do fine.
