Do I need knee surgery for a small tear and stress fracture?

I just received the results of my MRI that state that I have a small tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus extending to the inferior articular surface, a mild sprain of the medial collateral ligament and a stress fracture of the lateral tibial plateau. Is surgery necessary, or will physical therapy be enough? If surgery is necessary, how long is the recovery period? Thanks!

  1. I can help you... I am 12 years old but I know a lot about this kind of stuff. Physical therapy could be a possible remedy. PT is one of the most common solutions and if particularly common in your case. the PH and the IAS injuries are a very minor injury. If you should take the surgery option, recovery will be about 6-10 weeks (depending what treatment is done). Please contact me at http://www.freewebs.com/homehealthcare101
  2. Small tears of the meniscus are a common finding and frequently the pain subsides on it's own. Stress fractures should heal with the appropriate rest. It's unlikely that you would need surgery for this type of injury, but if you needed to have a meniscal debridement, it's a simple procedure with the patient on crutches for about a week, at home or formal PT for about 3-4 weeks and return to sport often in 3 months.
  3. Its not surgery but Operative arthroscopy which is required in your case. You will be running again like anything after 6 weeks.
