If your cartillage is repaired in arthoscopic knee surgery, shouldn't the doctor give you crutches?

My grandma is known for medically crying wolf. Today, she had arthoscopic knee surgery. For weeks, she's been complaining about knee pain and limping in this crazy exagerrated manor. She was unable to have an MRI for a diagnosis, so they scheduled the surgery. Her boyfriend took her to the surgery, so we couldn't talk to the doctor afterward. Now, she's telling everyone that the doctor had to repair her cartillage during the surgery. But, she's walking fairly normally and was not given crutches or anything even for today. (She is in her 70s). What are the chances that this is legitimate? I don't want to ignore her if it's real, but I'm also tired of the games and don't want to encourage these lies... any insight?

  1. I've had arthrospcopic knee surgery twice... everybody is different, every procedure is different... but for arthroscopic cartilage repair, usually a cane is sufficient for a while, and then you're good to go. Crutches are usually not needed. THERAPY is a MUST. If she's not having therapy, eiether she or her doctor is not being straight. And cartilage usually isn't "repaired". If it was torn, the surgeon will snip the torn piece out and suction it out of the joint. They don't repair it like with stitches.
  2. My daughter has had both her knees repaired. She was non weight bearing and on crutches for 6 weeks. After a repair, it would be impossible to walk. My daughter had a G11 knee immobilizer on. It runs from the hip past the knee. It has a locking mechanism at the knee, to prevent the knee from bending. Also after both surgeries her knee's were the size of big grapefruits. If your Grandma had the meniscus removed, she would probably be limping around with a cane for afew days. Removal is a simple surgery compared to a meniscus repair. However my husband has had the removal done twice, and both times he limped around for 2-4 days. And just a note to David above. They absolutely repair the meniscus. And yes it is stitched back together. And crutches are absolutely necessary. The reason for a repair is to save the patient from needing a total knee replacement. Removing the entire meniscus will 100% get you osteo-arthiritis down the road
