Information and opinions about Gastric Bypass Surgery?
I am overweight. Have been most of my life. I am looking at the pro's and cons to gastric bypass. I just have questions for those who have had it. I have yo-yo dieted for years, I was skinny for a few years then balloon. Then back to a decent weight. Got pregnant and now I have ballooned again. I was recently diagnosed as morbidly obese though my height and build doesn't make me look THAT big. I do NOT have any serious health issues other than the obesity, but have family history of several related medical problems. My mother was extremely over weight and died in January due to complications from diabetes and cancer. I want to do something about this now. I plan on doing a year at LA Weight Loss and a personal trainer at a local gym. If I dont get nice results I want to look at surgery. Please tell me side effects, complications, Insurance issues, psychological effects, can I have kids again after, and anything else you might like to add. Good and bad. please star for so lots of people can see I want the most opinions I can. I have done research on it but havent really heard testimonials. OKOKOK stop this people Answer the question at hand. I KNOW its un-natural and you are not helping me by reminding me. I need to hear FEEDBACK on people WHO HAD the surgery or went through the STEPS to getting it done. Barbara are those statistics for IF you have the surgery or IF you dont? I am confused

- I too want the surgery and have studied it greatly, if you have cable t.v. you can see it performed on big medicine at discovery health. the statistics are when you are more than 100lbs overweight you have very little chance of ever getting it off and virtually no chance of keeping it off! Our bodies will fight to keep the extra weight. In las vegas they do a mini-bypass for $17,000 and its not so radical.
- I know this isn't the answer you're looking for but Gastric Bypass surgery is UNNATURAL! You shouldn't hurt your body like that... You should join a weight loss group and make it fun - change your lifestyle. Don't punish your body. Cherish it and take care of it!
- My cousin had gastric bypass surgery she lost half her body weight, but it comes at a price. you will no longer enjoy eating overconsumption caused her serious pain and that was eating little more than a sandwich at one time, not sure if thats a typical result, or just her experience. shes also thinner now but not really in better physical condition. if you have the ability and willpower to do it on your own i wouldn't risk it. good luck
- I had RNY Gastric Bypass surger y In Oct 2007. I have lost 108 pounds in 8 months. I wore a size 24/26 and weighted 298 pounds the day of my surgery. Now I wear a size 12 and I'm still losing. I have had NO complications from surgey. The risk of Dying from the surgery is the same as any other surgery. The surgery is only performed by specialists and the risk of complications has fallen to an all-time low. In fact the complication with the highest risk is not dying, it is Divorce! My surgery was covered 100% through my insurance (Tricare Prime). You have to be at least 100 pounds overweight with a BMI of at least 40. Some insurance companies require psychiatric evaluations, appointments with a nutritionist and other requirements before getting a bypass. Mine did not. Yes, you can have children. They ask that you not get pregnant until at least one year after surgery to allow your body to heal. Any pregnancy post-surgery are considered high risk, though. I know 6 people that have had gastric bypass and then had children. none of them had complications and they had beautiful, healthy babies! The surgery is not for everyone. It is not a quick fix to being obese. it is a tool. It will limit the amount of food you can eat. You cannot eat fried foods, high fat foods or foods with sugar. You must watch the amounts you eat since you pouch can only hold 1/2 to 1 cup of food. You have to make sure you eat 70 grams of protien a day. Hair loss is normal after 6 months and stops after your weight stablizes. B12 deficiency is common and some people must take B12 shots for life. You will have to take vitamin supplements and calcium supplements for life. It is not "unnatural". I don't feel like a failure or useless. I am healthier than ever. I did this for my family. I wanted to see my 5 year old graduate from college. I wanted to be around to see him marry and have children of his own. I didn't do this to become "skinny" but to become healthy and live longer. - I had lap band and I found a website that does the comparison on both surgeries. http://health.ucsd.edu/specialties/lapband/about/options.htm I really said that after 5 years both surgeries were the same, it was the lap band was slower in taking the weight off. I was originally supposed to have gastric but things didn't work out, but that is another story. My doctor approved the lap band with no problem and I had the surgery 4-16-08 and I am down 39 pounds and bunch of inches and that is good for me, I just turned 60. It is good that you have a plan for LA Weight Loss and a personal trainer for a year, maybe you won't need the surgery. You can have children after 12-18 months after the gastric bypass and someone in my old weight loss support group did get pregnant after three months after gastric bypass and she followed all doctors orders and gave birth to a very healthy baby boy. With the lap band it stays in place and they just removed the fluid in the band and replace it after the pregnancy. All insurance companies have their own criteria and you have to ask what they are, or go online and look it up. The psychological effects, for me, have been great, and the health benefits for me is that I am off insulin and back on oral medication, and my doctor told me, that when I lose another 30 pounds, I will be off of it. So, you sound like you have all your bases covered. My cousin had gastric bypass one year ago in May and she is also doing great, lost 120 pounds, she said it was the best decision she had made. Good Luck, no matter what you chose.
- Hi! I have to say that mustangs gave a pretty informative answer. I recently had the surgery and my surgeon has done over 1000 procedures with NO fatalites, and they were all laproscopic. I did A LOT of research before I decided to do it, and since I am only a week out, I still wonder if it was the right thing. I KNOW it was, I know people who had the surgery over a year ago and they are extremly happy with their results and they say they can get almost anything to a certain point. However you have to do it in moderation and follow very closely the rules of the pouch and if they eat right, exercise and follow the rules then you WILL lose and you WILL keep it off. I haven't had any complications and I am on full liquids right now and have not had anything disagree with me haven't been too sick, but there is pain involved and it is major surgery even if it is laproscopic. This is the website for the hospital I went through and on the left side of the page it has links that should answer all your questions. http://www.shh.org/bariatrics/ I have to say, other than being overweight, I too had no real health issues. And all the reasons you want the surgery, are the reasons I did. Good Luck
- You can do this without surgery. All the surgery will do is make you throw up if you eat too much. Rather than a temporary "diet" make permanent changes to your eating and exercising habits to make it happen. You'll have to do that anyway with surgery, so why not skip the knife? Hire a therapist or join a weight loss group. The world's fattest man just lost (Manuel Uribe) has lost 700 pounds without surgery - you can too!
