Knee ACL surgery question.?

I dislocated my patella about 6 weeks ago in a fall from my bmx, and I have an MRI scheduled in a week, which I feel almost certain is going to show a partially or fully torn ACL, since I still can't bend my knee past 90 degrees, although I can walk normally and there is little to no pain and swelling at the knee. If this is the case, I plan to have surgery as soon as possible to repair it. I do competitive bmx flatland, and have a major competition in January '09. This sport requires my injured leg to act as a balance mechanisim, mostly, and occasionally it's required to kick/scuff the tyres, so there's little impact on the knee joints. Given this, if I have surgery in the beginning of September, would I be fully revovered, or well enough to give it my all in late January at the comp..?? How soon after can I start riding again? I'm 31yrs old and train with weights regularly, so I would be hitting my PT hard to speed my recovery. How long does a full recovery normally take..??

  1. I fully tore my ACL and partially tore my meniscus. I had reconstructive surgery in June, started rehab a week after and was back playing soccer in the fall. I think you can recover by then but it takes a LOT of hard work. You have to push yourself every day to work on regaining strength in your leg. It is difficult to learn to straighten and bend your knee but once you do it, its so worth it!
  2. there was no need to be a smart ass
