- No you don't. As long as it is done through the lap. procedure it is an outpatient surgery (meaning you go home the same day). If there are any complications or they have trouble removing it through the lap. then they may have to do an open incision and in that case you would have to stay in the hospital overnight. I think it is usually a 2-3 day hospital stay. They can almost always remove it through the lap. so your chances of an open procedure are very low. Good luck! Edit: If you go through a Dr. because you are having issues with it and he decides to remove it then it will be on an outpatient basis. Where as if it is an "emergency" situation (if you go to the ER for abdominal pain) then you may have to stay over night. I would recommend going to see your Primary Care physician and they will send you to get an ultrasound to see if you have gallstones and then they may refer you to a surgeon.
- According to this doc's site, you need to stay overnight... "Today, gallbladder surgery can be performed by laparoscopy, a minimally invasive technique not requiring a large incision. >>>>>>Patients usually return home on the morning following surgery, and they can resume their normal routine within a week.<<<<<<< With laparoscopy, patients lose less blood during surgery, and they experience far less pain. http://www.lapsurgery.com/gallblad.htm "
- I think it depends on the hospital/doctor. My husband and I both had ours removed and we had to spend the night.
