Can a person have weight loss surgery if they also have a hiatal hernia?

Or do they need to have it repaired first?

  1. Yes, I only know this because a friend of mine had the lapband done Nov. 2007 and she had hiatal hernia. The doctor found it when he was in there. She did not know she had it. The doctor repaired/fixed it when he was in there doing her lapband. She was a bit more sore then the regular lapband patient but overall she recovered with no issues.
  2. I had RNY surgery in August 06 and did not know I had the hernia. No problem, it was fixed at the time of surgery and immediately relieved my reflux issues before the weight loss even began!
  3. Yes I just had the band done on Tuesday and the surgeon found i had a hernia he fixed it then did the band , i did not even know i had one, i am just a little sore right now, i would rather have it all done at once and not 2 different times, one surgery is enough to go through and the surgeon said that 1 in 3 overweight people have hernia's.
