At what weight should someone consider weight loss surgery over dieting?

I worded that wrong. I know you have to diet whenever you have a weight loss surgery. What I want to know is at what weight should you consider the surgery? The person in question is 5 foot 3 and weighs 220 pounds. She thinks she needs the surgery. I think she can loose it without it.

  1. When your doctor says so. It is a risky surgery, wheter you're talking about the lap band, stomach staples, or liposuction, there are always the risk of complications (sometimes deadly) and it is usually reccomended for obese patients. Although, the number of people getting it has gone up, and a lot of people who don't *need* it get it because they are demanding it.
  2. When you are at least 100 pounds overweight. Morbidly obese. It's LOSE weight, not loose weight. When your shoe laces are untied, they are LOOSE.
  3. oh,come on im 246 pounds now i was almost 400 pounds a year a go but i melted off that weight through pilates, portion control and moderate amounts of cardio and yoga...
  4. weight is not the only factor. it should be the last resort for anyone under 60 that does not have severe problems with the endocrine system which would make fat loss through diet and exercise impossible. fat cells produce hormones and when you remove them from the body it is not longer in homeostasis. Dr's do not know the long term effects of this as many of these procedures are still rather new. but common sense tells you that it is not a benefit to the body in the long run. some people that have say the genetic disposition for easy weight gain have to realize that they have to eat healthy foods and exercise or they will surely die prematurely. people that have severe allergic reactions to certain foods do not eat them, people with the genetic predisposition for easy weight gain have to adopt this same manner of thought. dieting and exercise works for everyone when performed properly.
  5. You need to dicuss that with your doctor. It is hard to say at what point you need weight loss surgery. Do you have other health problems? Would they improve if you had weight loss surgery? What you want to achieve? I opted for Lap Band and I have done real well, but I had a lot of other health problems that have improved since I had my surgery. It is a decision that you have to make for yourself.
  6. I think it is a personal decision that each person will make. I am 5'3" and I weigh 200 and I am seriously considering this surgery because, at the age of 57, I am so tired of dieting - been on one since age of 9 - I'm a yo-yo-every time I lose and then gain back...I gain another 10-15 lbs. I am now physically not able to exercise and from what I have read and heard...this may be my last resort...
