Open Heart Surgery...?

My grandma whom is 72, will be having an open heart surgery because of clogged arteries. I don't know how to react or what to say.. I'm really kinda hurt right now, because my grandma means the world to me and I don't know how I can make the situation better for her, when I have always been able to. Can someone please explain how this works? How the procedure will go, and what are the risks... Please help. Thanks. Mr. Me : Thanks :)

  3. My mom had a quadruple bypass. What to expect depends on the persons strengnth and will. It is a lengthy recovery time about 6 months or more. Right now she is scred just like you. The best thing you can do is be there and remain stong and positive when around her. She needs your support and reassurance. As with any surgury death is possible. My mom survived her's but passed away 1 year later, that was also 13 years ago. Don't stop praying!!!
  4. Bypass surgery is still a complicated surgery, but it is much better now than years ago. Usually, you are out of bed the 2nd day, and the total hospital stay is a week or less if all goes well. Full recovery takes a while (months) and there is alot of hard work afterwards (change in eating habits, exercise, etc) but as long as there aren't any complications, or other issues going on, most people make a full recovery and can live for years afterwards.
  5. Be strong missy,it will be ok.Smile for me.
  6. Hey! Listen, I understand how scared you are, but being strong for your grandma is the most important thing right now. I am a cardiovascular ICU nurse. I'm the nurse that would take care of your grandma in the recovery room and first day post-op. When you go to see your grandma immedeately after surgery, know that it will look bad. But, within hours things will look a million times better! There will be lots of lines and tubes and machines at first, but within the first 24 hours, that should all disappear. She will need to get up and walk on the first day post-op and stay in the hosp for about 5-6 days total. Good luck to you and your grandma!
