Catholic views on weight loss surgery?
Does anyone know what the Catholics think when it comes to someone getting weight loss surgery. Like lap band or gastric by pass? I have never heard anything against it either but I know that cosmetic surgery is considered bad and some might consider weight loss surgery cosmetic.

- Don't think there is anything against it. There are medical reasons for it if someone is morbidly obese and might die. But even if it's just for cosmetic reasons, I don't think there is anything against it. There are a lot of complications to those surgeries though.. so whoever is considering it.. should REALLY weigh the options. I've listened to several Catholic radio shows and never heard them speak out against it.
- Most people i know who got those procedures were catholic If it improves one's health and does not harm the patient or others, the Church will not oppose it.
- Nothing against it that I have ever heard.
- Health reasons OK Vanity - not OK
- I'll be honest I have no idea on if or there is any church views on it! but as a catholic I will give you my views there are some cases that a persons weight is affecting there life and they have tried every method unsuccessfully to lower there weight and improve their health, I'm in full favor of that! There are also some people due to media and peer as well as pressure in society to conform to a certain weight look!, when they are an average normal size I'm not in favor so much for that! it's a persons choice I know but I'm talking about young girls models and that arena! also look at Micheal Jackson and Liza Minnelli's husband, ex husband I mean drastic cases of surgery!
- I haven't heard or read any special beliefs Catholics have on these matters& I feel most people that have this surgery is probably to save their life, if they live through the surgery; I know most do but there is that small chance that they wont make it. Quite a decision & a brave one Evie
