open heart surgery?
Hi, My husband found out this morning that his mom will be undergoing open heart surgery on Friday. We are really worried. I will be going with my husband to the hospital to be supportive. The doctor said something about 4 bypasses. What does mean? Also, can we have some extra prayers for her. Thanks so much.

- She will be in my thoughts .... There's nothing to be worried about...The surgens will do just fine..
- A friend of mine just had a quadruple bypass in November. He is doing great! The 4 bypasses mean that she has 4 major arteries leading into her heart that need replacing. They normally take a vein out of the leg or arm for this procedure, using it replace the failing part of the artery. Medicine has come a long way with this. Your mother in law will be sore for several weeks and she may have a nurse that comes into her home several times per week, as well as a physical therapist, who will have her do exercises to increase her strength. Good luck.
- Your MIL must need four coronary arteries that need to be grafted. The surgery its self is becoming routine believe it or not. If at all possible it will be done "off pump" meaning it will be done while her heart is beating without the by-pass machine. The recovery is much faster. The best thing the family can do is to allow the patient to get plenty of rest and not bombard her with company. In my hospital here in MN if all goes well, the patient will go home after 4 days. My prayers are with your MIL.
