Can I join the US Air Force if I had foot surgery?
I am 23 and interested in joining the US Air Force. 6 years ago I had foot surgery on my left foot because it is flat and used to always hurt. They fused one of the bones (which was supposed to stop the pain) by putting a few small screws in it, and now I am wondering if this will affect my ability to join the Air Force. I can still run, jump do push ups, sit ups, and walk long distances, etc. Anyway, does anyone know if I can join the Air Force after having this type of surgery? Thanks

- Former ARMY recruiter, here. (But the general rules are the same...) As far as getting in...as long as you are cleared for all activity (i.e. you have full range of motion and all that...) by your doctor and still have the paper work, you should be fine. The military doctor at the processing station may have to look at you...but it shouldn't be a problem if you have everthing documented. This is in no way an OFFICIAL answer...but, I would wager a paycheck that you still have a very good chance of getting in with no problems...(though, maybe a little bit longer processing...because of the medical review.) Good luck. Sarge US ARMY EDIT: While the answer below is from a RETIRED Army Recuiter, and is not incorrect...I just came off recruiting duty four months ago (for the second time!!) Things have changed since even that four months. I don't think I forgot anything...I said MEPS docs would have to look at him. BUT...out of the 100+ recruits I put in over that 3 years...a dozen of them had pins in thier bodies somewhere. IT CAN BE DONE!!!
- The Sarge is forgetting something. One of the questions the recruiter and MEPS doctors will ask you is "do you now have or have you ever had pins, plates or screws " It is an automatic disqualification, however, waivers are authorized, but not guarenteed. Clear as mud? They can let you in IF they feel it will not interfer with performing military duty.
