- This is a hard question to answer without more detail. What kind of open heart surgery? By-pass surgery (if so, how many bypasses), valve replacement, why is open heart surgery being done, etc? Also it depends upon other medical issues the 44 year old male may have also. There are risk factors with all surgeries including open heart but it also depends upon the individual and their current health conditions too as to the risk factors. Can you give us more details? I had open heart surgery (mitral valve replacement) in 2003 at the age of 38, doing great now, no problems at all.
