my baby boy had open heart surgery.....?
my little boy is now 13 months old when he was 6 months old he had open heart surgery to close two of his holes. anyway he still has a rather large lump on his chest where the had to cut through his sternum, is this normal? or should this swelling have gone down by now? im just worried because he seems to get sick alot, and after his surgery i worry about everything. thanks for ur answers.. ok the lump is directly under the scar but it is rock hard it feels like bone and its round if that helps....

- if the lump is along the site of operation it is the scar from the surgery
- Trust your heart doctors recommendations, if he says things are going to get better than you can worry less. Have had two open heart surgeries when I was five and 19 and it's been 15 years since. Know I will need a few more. Get all the information you can get on his conditions and courses of treatments and discuss with the doctor to show that you care and want the best for your child. Hopefully it will get better soon for you and him.
- Oh, your boy is perfectly fine! My son has Tetralogy of Fallot and had 2 open-heart surgeries by the time he was 1 year old, and he still has that REALLY hard and a little poked out spot underneath his "zipper" If you run your finger down his scar, almost right inbetween his nipples he has a rock hard, fairly large lump. His cardiologist and surgeon said not to woory it is just scar tissue and how his sternum healed together. Getting sick alot is also something EXTREMELY common for heart babies. They have very low immune systems and are susseptable to everything. My son gets sick at LEAST once a month. He is two now and has had RSV, bi-lateral pnemonia, the Rota Virus, MRSA staph infection, a dozen colds and ear infections and I'm sure there is more that I can't think of, but don't worry, just keep your house and his surrounding very clean, use a humidifyer when he sleeps and make sure you wash his hands alot! Good luck to you and your baby! Our heart babies are the strongest! Please feel free to e-mail me if you want to talk or have any questions!! Take Care!
