Open heart surgery and cholesterol?

I had open heart surgery about 3 years ago, and have since had my cholesterol tested on a few occasions. Each time it says i have high cholesterol but i have been told that that could be due to the surgery. does anyone know where i can get more information on this, or does anyone know the answer to this. Oh and my surgery was to fix a Birth Defect i did not know i had that involved two of my pulmonary veins being connected to the wrong side of my heart. I should add i am 25 and had the surgery at 23, i had never shown instances of high cholesterol before the surgery.

  1. I've had 3 heart attacks in 20 years and I know a bit about the subject. I've never heard of surgery being a cause of High Cholesterol. Depends on your age and how high the reading is. It's a good idea to get it down lower anyway to prevent problems later in life.
  2. It sounds to me like your doctor should have put you on a cholesterol med, ask him/her about that. There are several things you can do in your diet to reduce your cholesterol levels: Drink water, do not eat pork products-only lean meats, get a cod liver oil supplement in pill form from your pharmacy in the vitamin section, eat oatmeal (not the instant kind), do not eat anything made with white flour-only whole grain breads, NO FAST FOOD OF ANY SORT-especially McDonalds (that place should be shut down-its sooooo bad for you), fried foods at home in moderation-once or twice a month, EXERCISE-huge way to lower the cholesterol-almost works by itself, and if you are not already on an anti-coagulant such as coumadin (warfarin), lovenox or heparin and you do not have any type of bleeding problems, then take one baby aspirin a day. Talk to your doctor and find out just how concerned he/she is about your cholesterol. if you are overweight, eat better and exercise to reduce your weight.
  3. TAPVR : Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return, this was the congenital heart defect that you were born with and I don't think that is the reason for your high cholesterol. Since you had heart surgery you should be more aware of your health, first of all you should have a proper diet, I mean to avoid grease foods specially Pork, have a low cholesterol meals and food, eat more fruits and fish, green salads, even you could also start a exercise program specially Cardiovascular exercises at the Gym or riding a bike, it's all in your hands now .Good luck
