weight loss surgeries...if you can adhere to the surgery guidelines, why not diet?
...there have been several people I work with who have undergone weightloss surgery. I applaud their efforts to be healthy- but the dietary requirements are very strict- if you can stick to those- why not diet? For the record, I have struggled with weight my entire life...over the past 2 years I have lost weight very slowly...totalling 140 pounds. I was a candidate for the weight loss surgeries...but had a doctor who sat me down and asked.."have you really committed to a weight loss program? please consider that before you elect to have this surgery"... I think the rise of surgeries is part of our society's need for immediate gratification. Whether that is popular or not- that is MO.

- It's not the same. Unless you've ever been obese you wouldn't understand. It has a large part to do with feeling full. Most people who had surgery never felt full, grazed throughout the day, or binge ate. You can't binge anymore or you'll vomit, stretch your pouch, slip your band, get stuck, PB, or catch the slimes. Could you imagine eating a meal, and not feeling full? Could you imagine eating a large meal and being hungry 30 minutes/2 hours later? Most people have satiety issues that have WLS. Like I said unless you are/were obese at some point, you wouldn't understand.
- I agree with Nerds Rule! The surgeries are not the same. I know that when u get a lap band it shrinks your stomach and therefore u cannot eat as much. and that helps along with strict diet. Sometimes diet and excecise are not enough!
- because it just comes right back. My mom lost all of her weight in 6-8 months and it all came right back within 3 months. She is now in the plans of getting the lapband.
- the surgery forces you to adhere to the dietary rules, generally. You can't overeat or you will suffer the concequences (throwing up, pain, etc). the surgery is only a tool for weight loss, the work comes later, as they must adhere to the rules to prevent regaining the weight they've lost as a result of the surgery.
