Have you gone through weight-loss surgery?

This is not an invite for people to critisize someone's choice, but only to share valuable information. I would like to hear from those of you who have used surgery to take off weight. Be it Gastric Bypass, stomach stapling, or the newer stomach banding. Was it worth it? Did you have many complications? Did your health insurance cover the costs? Because of the personal nature of this question, I understand if you would rather answer by email, so feel free to click on the link in my profile. Thanks!

  1. umm sorry if my answer if pointless and doesnt not help but, i have never gone through weight-loss surgery.
  2. i won't criticize, but i will say from my personal medical background experience this is a serious surgery. if you are making the decision please do a lot of research online before deciding. i would also say the band is the safer way to go. i have seen a large amount of bad outcomes from these surgeries so if you are not at the point where you (or whoever the question is about) really NEEDS the surgery because you def. can't walk or do anything else to try to lose the weight or they already have comorbities then please think very carefully before deciding to do it. it puts your body at a permenant state of malnutrition and you have to take vitmins every day as well as crush all your pills and several other things. i am by NO means saying don't do it if the person is a good candidate, just please make sure it's a highly researched and informed decision. best wishes.
  3. I'll answer your question. I could care less what others say/think because they cannot judge me unti lthey've walked in my shoes. So far, I've only received encouragement from people I know that I talk to about me having surgery. I just recently had the surgery(RNY) 3 months ago and I'm doing fantastic. I've lost about 63 lbs. and feel like a new person. I've had no complications whatsoever. It took about 3 weeks to feel better from the pain of the surgery. I have no difficulty eating meats, eggs, or other sources of protein like others sometimes do. I think some of the secret is chew, chew, chew, chew. You absolutely have to dedicate your life to a new way of living. I've had friends who do what they're suppose to, and those who didn't, and those who didn't literally look like death warmed over. So vitamins and protein shakes it is. My insurance covered the surgery with no hiccups. I've been stuck with minimum fees. The surgeon's office knows the ins and outs of the insurances. If you or someone you love is considering having the surgery, I suggest they do A LOT of research and fully understand the changes involved in order to live a healthy life. Why go through this only to disregard what the doctor tells you and be unhealthy? It is a big decision and should be treated as such. I would do it over and over again. There has only been a couple people I know that have regreted it. One key is to have a support system of people that KNOW from EXPERIENCE what you go through. No one understands but those who've had the surgery. You go through so many changes. I hope this helps with your questions. Feel free to email me if you have further questions. Also, www.obesityhelp.com is a very useful site for surgery information.
  4. my mother had the Gastric Bypass done and I don't think she regrets having it done. She had no complications due to the surgery but that's not saying there isn't any. Her insurance payed for the most of it. I think she only had to pay $500. But in my opinion, thats a small price to pay for better health. Just remember, follow the doctors orders before and after having it done and go to support meetings whenever you can. It is a decision that only you and your Dr. can make. Good Luck!
