What is the deal with flat feet?

I just don't understand what the big deal is. My lab partner showed me scars on his knees from a surgery he had, I asked what for, he said that he was flat footed. What's the big deal if you have flat feet? Does the arch in the foot provide certain advantages like better joint health and increased agility/mobility?

  1. Flat feet generally cause decreased agility and mobility. Take a look yourself...a flat footed person will walk differently -in slow, dragging like movement and cannot run as fast. Often, it can be cured by simply engaging in some good sport and surgery is required in extreme cases only.
  2. It can be temporarily resolved wearing shoes with a high arch. Like the arches found in cross training shoes. Though, it will be uncomfortable at first. If its really affecting the persons life a long term resolution would be to get the feet operated on. I think my great aunt had a metal plate put in her feet to simulate an arch. That was nearly 10 years ago. No problems since.
