failed back surgery syndrome? Has anyone found a cure or a way to live with the constant pain other than morphine? My dr. wants to do a nerve block but has to go through the base of my spine due to the 7 inch rods in the way. He states that if it does not help then I need the rods removed. I have had the back of three vertebrae L3-L5 removed, the rods+screws+plates hold it all together. The original surgery put me using a walker for 3 months when I was 37. Has anyone had their rods removed? I would really like someone to talk to. I have since found that my original neurosurgeon has been sued 8 times since 1999, 3 times for wrongful death. I though he was a good doctor as I checked with the AMA. Now I don't know who to trust or if this nerve block is the right thing to do as I don't know anyone who has ever had one when they had harrington rods. I have also read that harrington rods are not meant to be left in, has anyone had them for longer than 3 1\2 years. Thanks in advance for the help :)

Joining British Army after Surgery on Legs? Anyone know if the army would accept me after having surgery on my legs (a fasciotomy)? I have attempted selection already but failed on the run time. I went to see my GP as my leg was hurting and they think I could have Compartment Syndrome and need surgery. Do you know / think the British Army would accept me after this? (Obviously providing I pass selection)

Why am I still having shoulder trouble after surgery one year ago? I had surgery one year ago on my shoulder for impingement syndrome. Part of my collar bone was removed. Initially got better but over the last four months the same pain as before the surgery has returned. The surgeon told me that my shoulder is "failing". Is anyone aware of why I would have the same pain as before the surgery? Could it be the result of a bad bicep tendon? The injury that initially caused the pain occurred at work and the insurance company is pressuring me to settle for a one time payout instead of keeping my lifetime medical. Does anyone know the cost associated with shoulder surgery in the event I would need another one? And finally, is this just something I will have to live with the rest of my life since my surgeon told me that my shoulder was "failing"?

Long term pain medication usage. Does this make a person unaware of what he or she is saying or doing? A man I am seeing is on high dosage of pain medication percacet and morphine for failed back syndrome. He had 8 surgeries nearly died. The only way now the pain clinic feels they can give him any quality of life is the pain medication for life. The issue is he seems to say things that are rude and "not remember" he can be fine one moment and a jerk the next! Argumentative etc. Is this a sign that maybe they need change the medication? And how do you present this to the person that does not "see" this? Any advise is welcomed and much thanks to anyone taking the time to offer advise.

Is gallbladder surgery painfull? My father in law had the surgery and after he was returned to his room for the next 3 days he was not given pain medication. Seven days later he died of acute respiratory distress syndrome (the kidneys failed, he got a blood clot a day after the surgery). My position is that he could not expand his lungs the way he needed to because he was in pain (he was 87). And there for the pneumonia / ards set in his lungs. Once he was admitted to icu (on a monday), they gave him morfine. Which tells me that the health care professionals knew that he had pain. Part of the excuse to the family was that his doctor was not in on the weekend. For a younger person, this surgery would have allowed them to go home in four hours. For someone his age he was to go home 3 days later. Is gallbladder surgery recovery painful? I'd like to add that he was in good health other than having gall stone. I believe the surgery was a key hole procedure, since the doctor said that younger patients can go home in four hours. He had a lawn care business, of which he was still working until he fail ill with gall stones. He was not a smoker. His vitals were supriseingly normal for his age. Before the surgery the doctor said that his lungs were clear. Other than being weak from not eating because of the gall bladder, he was in good health. I do think that the Willis-Knighton Medical Center is a hospital to think twice about before admitting a loved one. Due diligence is not their strong suit. Thank you for your input. I'm just trying to make sense of his death.

Looking for tips on speeding up recovery after rectal surgery.....? I have been diagnosed with a rare but serious disease called "Rectal Ulcer Syndrome". After several failed medications, including steroid treatments, my doctors have decided on surgery. They will be removing the ulcer through the rectum as well as removing hemmorhoids that have resulted from my affliction. I have been informed a minimal three day/night hospital stay is required, as well as 4-6 weeks of bed-rest for me to heal. Any advice on speeding up my recovery would be greatly appreciated. I have never had any major surgeries before and am not sure quite what to expect.

After all the illness' i have, i had to go to er by ambulance. i have 10 kidney stones in my rt kidney? i also have depression, anxiety, bi-polor, 2 failed back surgeries, fibromyaliga, colitis, gastritis, chrones disiese,chronic migraines, low thyroid, restless leg syndrome, spinal stenosis, short term memory, that is really bad, when you ask someone the same thing 3-4 times within 5 min, so i feel like a bother to everyone, hyper mobility, high b/p, hair loss from stress, but a dermitoligest put me on a new med, guess i'll have to wait and see. Federal Workers Compensation IME's? I am on Federal WC for the past two years. I injured my back 12 years ago at work, had surgery, was out of work a total of 10 months prior to and after the surgery. I was out of work 5 months before WC finally approved the surgery, which was 100% pure pain going through physical therapy and all before they finally did an MRI at which time they discovered I needed surgery immediately. I went back to work, and was much better after the surgery, however, I still lost days of work here and there over the years due to severe, debilitating pain. On these days that I was out of work due to my back problem, I always used my own leave. I felt I could not be bothered with all the paper work so I bit the bullet and used up most of my leave. Fortunately, I had wonderful co-workers and bosses that let me work at home when I was unable to make the trek to work. Now fast forward 10 years after the surgery...I am unable to walk, sit or stand for very long at all - thus resulting in the past two years of being on WC. In a nutshell I have no life, and the life I have is 95% housebound and 100% pain (when awake) etc. I now use a cane, sometimes a walker depending on how bad I am. The diagnosis...a failed back discectomy syndrome. I have a difficult time admitting to this, but the life I once had (which was very active and wonderful) is now a thing of the past.....not to mention my second job that I also had as a bartender making fabulous money, nights and weekends before my surgery. Now I am back and forth with IME's. My primary orhtopaedic doctor has been with me through this whole thing (12 years) and is wonderful (he feels very bad about my situation), but there is nothing they can do for me at this time. Now my question is the IME's that WC makes us patients go to. I live in Massachusetts and I have my third IME (in two years) approaching and was notified by mail that I am not allowed to have anyone in the room at this exam with me. I would like to know if anyone knows if this is legal or not. It sounds awful suspicious to me. I have never received a letter of this sort before. Once I had a family member come into the exam room with me at the last IME because I was very sick and weak that day from the pain. Can anyone tell me if they know if this is legal in MA for a patient to be ordered to be alone in a room at an IME exam by a workers compensation doctor?

Gastric Bypass, pregnancy and glucose testing? Any advice? I had gastric bypass surgery 4 yrs ago, and now I am 14 weeks pregnant. Im taking all the right vitamins and being careful how I eat. I had the glucose tolerance test (1 hr) and the limit was 135, I scored 135. The OBgyn ordered a 3 hr test with the 100 Glucose load and I thought I was going to die the dumping syndrome was so bad. Well of course I failed the first hour and the subsequent hours were fine. Im now supposed to be on a special diet for diabetes, monitoring my blood sugar 4 times a day and during the ketone test every morning with my urine. The diet has 6 servings of starches a day. Im not supposed to eat carbs in that amount with gastric bypass, Im supposed to focus on protein first. Ive done some research and G.Bypass patients arent even supposed to do the glucose testing because it can make them sick. My doctor seems to be missing the fact that I had this done and that it changes me. I remind him often. Should I seek a specialist? Change doctors? Anyone go thru this? Also the nutritionist at the clinic didnt adjust the diet for my dietary needs, she just handed me the standard "glucose intolerant" diet. Im waiting for a call back from my bariatric surgeon but havent heard back yet. I need serious advice on this Thanks thats what I thought! I knew I was going to fail the first hour cos I cant digest sugar, and when it came back high I thought DUH. My fasting blood sugar is always normal, I dont get extreme highs. I test often cos my parents are diabetic and Im at risk for it. And its always fine. Now they are treating me like I am and I keep telling them no...its called not having a stomach! :) Maybe I should find a specialist! i'm always sick... i seriously only feel good once a week, if that. please read!? i'm always tired, i always have a massive headache, i usually have a stomachache, i'm weak, i can't concentrate and i can't think. i am always sick like this, since about May. i feel good once a week, if that. and when i say "feel good", it means i feel well enough to get out of bed and get something done. i missed so many school days last school year from not feeling good that i became homeschooled so i wouldn't fail administratively. that was around january of 2007. i didn't feel good a lot, but not as much as i don't feel good now. and today i woke up to a sinus faceache and postnasal drip as well.... what do you think is wrong with me? at the end of my freshman year (june 2005) i had surgery to remove an adrenal gland because i was diagnosed with cushing's syndrome. i am cured of that now, my cortisol levels are fine. my mom thinks i might have chronic fatigue syndrome. but what do you think? and how can i feel better? thanks. a lot of times i have shortness of breath, too. like i feel like i can't absorb the oxygen in my lungs and i breathe really heavy and sometimes hyperventilate randomly.

long term effects for severely shaken babies? i was a premature drug baby (2.5 pounds at birth) at five months old i was still smaller than a healthy newborn, and i was severely shaken by my biological father. my eyes got real screwed up, ive had three surgeries to fix them though one will eventually fail because it is not strong enough, all the muscles and what not that attatch my eyes to my socket were torn when i was shaken. not so cool.... i suffered a subdural hematoma, which nearly killed me, if it werent for my foster family(which is now the only family i know, and are my adoptive parents) i would be dead.my brain was bleeding for about a month and a half before she really noticed soemthing was seriously wrong with me and took me back tot he hospital early, and demanded the doc take a look, took a while but the doctor finally cam in, and i was then rushed three hours away to Doernbeckers childrens hospital in portland, oregon. the doctor there said that the pressure around my brain would ahve killed me within 24-48 hours. i have scars and dents on my head where they drilled four holes to drain and relieve the pressure. i have some pretty aggravating back problems (abnormality in the middle of my back around where i was held during shaking, rotoscoliosis, and spina bifida_ i know spina bifida is a birth defect, and that scoliosis is usually hereditary, but is there any chance it and the abnormality may have been caused my the trauma to my spine? on the xrays of my back scars are visible on my ribs, and i have a scar on my ribs where my biological fathers thumbnail dug into my skin. i can not find a single thing on the long term effects shaken babies have. i know i would sure as hell like to know, seeing as i have that to look forward to in my future... can anyone tell me anything? or lead me in the right direction for some solid information? i am 20 years old now, and am a lucky one. i do have some memory problems, but other than that i dont know of anything else that is connected with shaken baby syndrome. i dont know.. i just wish i knew more about what to expect in the years to come.. by the way, i was shaken to the point of becoming unconscious and then thrown back into my crib (as my bio. father confessed) he said that he had shaken me multiple times that day, because i kept crying (pitiful excuse, this should never happen to anyone...)

i'm sick ALL THE TIME. i seriously can't remember the last time i felt ok.. maybe april? i'm 17 years old, i shouldn't feel like crap all the time. i missed so many days of school that i decided to be homeschooled so i wouldn't fail for missing too many days. every day i'm tired and weak, have a headache, a stomachache, and i can't concentrate or think. when i was 15 i had surgery to remove an adrenal gland because i had a tumor on it that was causing me to make tons of cortisol (cushing's syndrome). my natural state, when i'm not sick or when i feel ok, is very athletic and happy and social. now i am in bed most of the time and i only see my boyfriend on weekends. being sick all the time and not being able to do anything makes me really depressed. and a lot of times, i catch flubugs too. like right now i have a stuffy nose and postnasal drip and a sinus headache, which i've had for about a week. it's terrible. i get a flubug about once a month. what do you think is wrong with me? i am afraid that i am going to be sick the rest of my life. i don't need this. please help i had my cortisol checked about a month ago; they've been checking it every month and they say it's fine. i went to the doctor yesterday; he said it was allergies. i just don't know right now. i told him all my symptoms and that's all he said. allergies. oh, it's just depression, it's just stress, it's just allergies. what the hell. with the way doctors are these days, i'm going to be sick and miserable and a prisoner to my bed for the rest of my life.

How to get SIL to stop doing the MIA's every weekend? My SIL & brother come in from the city every weekend. Just about every weekend she diaspears to do crack and binge drink, leaving the care and responsiblity of my two nephews with us. They just dont care, they lack total empathy. My youngest nephew (3) has down syndrome and frequent seizures, he is tube fed. The 'button' is infected and I'm so scared I will over dose him in on his meds bc I just dont know when he is suppose to have what. I feel so incompetant and stressed. I live with my parents bc they are elderly and have some health problems. I have 2 daughters 5 & 5mos, plus a neices & nephews that we raise 7 & 10. My father just had a knee surgery & my mother is just getting over pnemonia. Last night my Sil & brother came to town. He left to help a friend who got stuck. Not long later my SIL was talking with me in the kitchen, she left the room and I heard a door open and close... she snuck out! She most likely wont return till Monday, stay in the guest room for 2 days and come out angry w/ us! This all just happens so often that its become normal. They do this on birthdays, Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas. I mean when I was 39wks pregnant, my mother was sick w/ pnemonia, my father had strep, and they left for a week! This was when my nephew w/ down syndrome just started getting tube fed & no one was told about anything. Its difficult bc you just learn how to give him his meds and the docs change them and she doesnt inform us on ANYTHING! Her oldest son was living with us last year bc he couldn;t miss any more school or he would fail. He started coming to me with owiies and problems and she got mad at me! He's 9 and when they disapear I'm the one talking to him, telling him its not his fault. She cant even use the excuse that the youngest is stressful bc this has been going on 4 ten yrs! She misses they youngest ones appointments and takes none of it serious. It does no good to talk to them bc nothing changes & it causes even more problems. We all feel like we're enablers but what do we do? If she did this to her family once, they would call CPS on her in a heart beat. she never does anything like this to them EVER and I'm soooo angry! What do I do? I guess why I'm letting my brother 'off the hook' or not coming down as hard is because he has a disability as well & his finer motor skills are lacking thus he can't really give meds or do feedings. will these disabilites help me in court? My child support was Automatically Deducted from my paycheck. I lost my job of 13 years and still am not working. In 2005 I had three Surgeries on my eye, and am now blind in that eye. I also have tourtte syndrome and learning Disabilities. Having all these things I just Mentioned it makes it Difficult to find a good job. I'am trying so hard to find something and failed the tests that are required for the job. I'am getting ready to goto court for backed up child support. I 'am also trying to file for Disability. will these disabilites help me in court? keep in mind I have proof of jobs I got turned down for, and also I had holes in my Retina in my right eye.
