Has anybody out there had Fusion surgery for back pain. What is your opinion and how successful is it ? I am a candidat for Fusion surgery but would like to hear from somebody who has had the experience.
Has anyone had lower lumbar fusion surgery on their back, and how was the recovery for it? I havent had the surgery yet. I have a disk that corrioded, and it is bone to bone now and very painful. I have been told that the recovery time is 6-8 months. Is this true?
Do nuerological surgeons perform Spinal Fusion Surgery (arthrodesis) on lower back areas? I know cervical surgery is common, but is it also common for the Sacrum and Lumbar areas of the spine?
Has anyone had scoliosis spine fusion surgery, then had a injury that caused a spine fracture below the fusion? My teenage daughter had a scoliosis fusion 2 years ago, 8 months ago was involved in a auto accident and broke her back below where the fusion is, had another surgery 6 months ago. She experiences great pain most times. Has anyone experienced a similar experience? What about pain management? We have tried most things.
Where can i have a triple fusion cervical surgery done in the US? I need a triple fusion surgery done in my cervical spine. I just had a triple epidural injection under flouroscopy by a pain Doctor. She told me that i need surgery. I cannot even afford the consultation. I have stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and arthritis thrughout my entire spine. The spinal disc problem has been there for many years, probably as a result of my father throwing me thru two sliding hollow door closet door when i was only 9 years old. He was very physically abuse. I've also had many sports and other injuries. I have insurance but cannot afford any deductible. I had to retire early because of it and cannot work anymore, and am on a fixed income. Does anyone know of a hospital that does this surgery just for the insurance payment, or better yet free under a research grant. I still have numerous medical bills from other illnesses. Lower Back Fusion Surgery. Would like to here pros's and con's.? I have three disk that have dissingraded and two doctors recommending fusion surgery to help the pain I have shooting down my leg. I've had the testing all done so I know this is the problem but is this one of those "the cure is worse than the desiese" type things?

Anyone playing golf after wrist fusion surgery? I am considering surgery to improve pain problems with arthritic right wrist. The surgery is called fusion; wrist bones fused into one. Wrist does not bend afterwards. Hand/finger strength improves and pain is much reduced (according to the medical people) Golf possible, or not? I tried hitting some balls with a tight wrist brace to simulate the difference. Seems like it should be possible to adjust the swing with some practice. Comments?
How long was recovery time after your spinal fusion surgery? I had spinal fusion surgery 12 days ago, L4, L5. I was up and walking within one day, and out of the hospital in less than two. I'm wearing a brace, and have some pain, but manageable. Walk about a mile a day, but that's about only activity I can do now. Can anyone share their experience on recovery time?
Can a person have decompression surgery and then later have fusion surgery without added risks? After physical therapy and EPI steriod injections, a neurosurgeon's opinion stated that I may need an L4-5 decompression AND fusion. If I decide to have just decompression surgery, then I'm wondering the possible effects/risks of fusion surgery later on (incremental to if I were to have both procedures done at the same time).

Contemplating lower back surgery fusion. Need advice help!? Hi, I am considering back surgery fusion,but I'm scared. I have been suffering for 10 yrs with lower back pain, I have gone to P.T.,had injections, pain management,which was a night mare for me it was hard I could not handle it. Should I consider joint fusion surgery for my Chiwauwau? He is one years old and I got him as present. I didn't realize he had a birth defect until I took him to th vet; one of his hind leg joint never fused, At the time the vet said that its common in purebreeds and that I should hold off on surgery because sometimes the leg may never be the same. The Neuro Surgen said he has faith he would get better on its own in about five years or he has the opion to get fusion surgery but there was no gurantee he would be back to normal he would not be able to do heavy duty work. Does anyone have "nerve damage" pain after a past Spinal Fusion surgery? I had spinal fusion 10 years ago. My whole spine is fused with 2 rods, to correct a very severe curvature. Ever since the surgery, i'll occasionally get a pain it my right shoulder blade (on my back). It feels like getting stabbed with a burning hot knife. It is AWFUL. I know what you'll all say "go to the doctor," but unfortunately I've gone to my surgeon, and a couple of GP's already. They all tell me "it's nerve damage", and i should take tylenol or ibuprfen (i'm allergic to narcotic pain meds). Does anyone else have "nerve damage" pain? If you do, does anything help you out? I've tried OTC pain meds, muscle relaxers, heating pads, and back muscle stretches. Thanks! I live in Illinois. I can't take a drug called "Lyrica," because i have a history of kidney problems.

So much pain on foot after back surgery? i had spinal fusion surgery about a month ago because my nerves were so damaged they were very tiny. now after surgery my foot was painful to the touch. it hurt to put a sock on. now i can barely walk. it is so painful it burns in my arch when i try to walk. piercing pain pokes my toes at random times. could this be because my nerves are healing or is it getting worse cause the pain is getting worse. and i wore a backpack also so could that have been the cause?

I have to have neck surgery - a cervical fusion of 2 levels. Why do I have to wear a collar? I've talked with four people I know who had successful fusions that didn't have to wear the collar. Their doctors didn't believe in them. Mine does. I've worn one before and I lost all flexibility with my muscles. How can I explain to my doctor that the negative impact is worse than any help they offer? My first fusion failed (with bone morphogenetic protein) and I wore the collar for two solid weeks! Not sure if he'll use my own bone or not this time. (Different doctor this time- Thank God! -since no one noticed the fusion failed for over a year until I changed doctors - despite much pain). Has anyone had disc fusion surgery on their neck (C5/C6)? If so, was it a success? My boyfriend has to undergo disc fusion on his c5/c6 disc in his neck. Disc replacement is not an option (saw the best doctor on the East coast) because the area below the disc has collapsed and he also has some narrowing and a bone spur. Sacroiliac Joint Fusion Surgery? Have you had surgery on the sacroiliac joint? How was the outcome? How long did the pain last? Was it successful? How long until you were back to full motion? I was told up to 6 full months, is that true? Did you get temporary disability while going through physical therapy? Do they ever remove the screws and what happens if you are alergic to metals on the skin? Will this cause an interior infection? The Nurosegeon has diagnosed this problem that's causing my pain as I and my physician mistook it for a herniated disk and have read up on some but am very scared about the fusion with screws in the hip. I have tried pain meds, anti inflamatories, physical therapy and chyropractic care. None have worked and the pain is more direct on the left back hip bone. It is very intense when I walk, sit or push on it. We are going to try these local injections first, 2 anesthetics and a placebo to see if this is specifically the problem and work from there but the surgeon believes with the Physical Labor type of work I do/have done for many years with my frame (5'10" 125lbs) could be a major cause of this problem along with some previous injury of falling off of a ladder directly on my lower tailbone, left hip. Hope this helps.
Has anyone ever had the Posterior Spinal Fusion Surgery?? I recently had the posterior spinal fusion surgery for scoliosison Jan. 30th, 2008. Pre-Op I had a 52 degree curvature. I have been having some really bad pains in my hips and my back of course. It almost seems to be getting worse everyday. My parents want me to try to go back to school on Wed. Feb. 20th, 2008, but I don't think I'm ready. I afraid because our school has rock solid chairs that are really uncomfortable. And I'm afraid that since our school has about 1800 students that somebody is bound to bump into my back. If that happened, I would break down and cry. My back is still REALLY sensitive, I get really protective when someone trys to touch it. Anyone that has had this surgery, please tell me about your experience and maybe offer me some advice =) thanks so much! And ever since I've been home from the hospital, I've been really emotional. I constantly cry... I've been mostly crying because I miss being in the hospital... is this normal? Did anyone else have this same issue?? And I also feel very stressed out about all of my school work, it seems like its never ending and I just haven't really felt like doing any of it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated =)

broken wrist - now total wrist fusion surgery.... any advice? Seven years ago I broken my wrist and was released from care before it healed properly. I went on for five years with a nonunion before I saw a dr. It was then recommended that I have a surgery where 3 bones were removed from my wrist and ground up for cartilage to be used between two screws they put in. When the cartilage was absorbed I went in for another surgery where cartilage was drilled from my hip and another two screws were put in. Again - didn't work. I am having pain again and have been pushed to consider total wrist fusion surgery. Anyone have any experience with this or know anything about it? Are there any other options anyone knows of (I've heard of wrist joint replacement?) or how has total wrist fusion has effected someone else? I'm only 25 and I don't want to do something that's going to change the quality of my life. Thanks in advance for any help or experience! I've done as much research as I can so please don't suggest I search the net.

I was born with scoliosis and degenerative disease.Had surgery in 2004 on c3-c7 fusion and in pain always!? Had this fusion surgery done in 2004 at WashU Stl. Even though I had surgery, I am in more pain than before. The surgeon does not want to have anything to do with me now, because I no longer have health insurance. I am suffering big time and can get nobody to listen. I can't sleep, cannot sit too long, cannot lay too long, cannot walk too long or real painful if I do. I have been trying to get disability since 1999 and doctors say I have worked too much. Well, duhhhhhhhhh! I am divorced and no children, who else will take care of me if I don't. I can't sleep at night and this is when I suffer the most. What do you recommend? Your suggestions for this matter would be greatly appreciated. I am so tired of being in pain and so tired of being tired of complaining, but reality is reality and pain is pain! Help please? Anyone had spinal fusion surgery? My neurosurgeon has recommended spinal fusion because I have herniated discs at L3-L4, L4-L5, and L5-S1. I have tried physical therapy and it did not help. It just made the pain worse. I can't even hardly move and am in constant pain all of the time despite being on pain meds and muscle relaxers around the clock. I am not working right now. I am trying to move around as much as possible. I can't hardly sit, stand, or lay down for more than a few minutes at a time. What kind of results have you had with spinal fusion surgeries?
Is there anyone out there with a SUCCESSFUL back fusion at L2-3, L3-4, L4-5 and scolioses at the apex L2-3??? My husband already has had fusion at L4-5. This was an extremely successful surgery that almost gave him 100% relief from the back pain he'd suffered with for several years. About 18 months post surgery, he injured his back again, causing stress to the two discs above L4-5. We've tried everything short of fusion surgery (all the various site shots, physical therapy, a spinal cord stimulator, etc.) and nothing has offered relief. He's on some pretty strong pain meds and they only give SOME relief, he's in constant pain. He's an educator and is still teaching. We've been to numerous Doctors and the neurosurgeons are warning against more fusion because he also has scoliosis and the curve starts right where the top of the fusion would be. One orthopedic doctor we went to (highly recommended) told us that fusion was the ONLY thing that would give significant relief from the pain. However, the nuero guys are afraid it will weaken his spine because of the scoliosis. HELP, please!!!

Cervical c5-c6 disk protrusion, surgery or no surgery (fusion)? Cervical c5-c6 disk protrusion, chronic strong neck pain only no pain radiating to arm. surgeon wants to fuse the disk, would any one recommend fusion or suggest no surgery. on going for 3 years now...pain increase and decrease daily. able to live 60% normal life now, worried surgery may make it worse, any help would be great.

Do cold temperatures. cause back pain for people who had back surgery? I had spinal fusion surgery July of this year. Here in Las Vegas, winter just got here. When I go to school its in the low 40's now. The last couple of days my back has been a little sore, and today I was in a lot of pain. Whenever I moved my head back or to the side, I got shooting pain down my spine, and most of the pain settled around and in between my shoulder blades. I had talked to people who had this surgery and they said the cold weather did give them some pain and discomfort, but this was a lot of pain, and I didnt expect it to be this bad. I dress warm, and I dont feel cold, but is my back really sensitive to the temperature now? Could this be the cause of my pain? And is this common with my type of surgery?

Fever following Spinal Fusion Surgery? A good friend of mine was operated on she had spinal fusion on 3 vertibrae, screws etc. This was two days now, and she is not up and about yet, altho' today she did stand with a walker. She is running a fever of 101-2f which the doctors do not seem partictularly alarmed about, they are treating it with tylenol. Should I be concerned? They originally said there would be a four day hospital stay and 4 days in rehab. I am having a hard time believing that she will be well enough to leave the hosp. in two days, even to go to rehab.

Has anyone ever had bone fusion surgery in their ankle? I have been told I need three bones in my right ankle fused. Also, the surgeons will try to repair a tendon that ruptured in my lower leg. I won't be able to put weight on that foot for three months. I can't use crutches b/c I have arthritis in my shoulders, too. So I may need a mobility scooter for a while. I need some quesiotns answered. How did you get around after this type of surgery? Were you in the hospital for this, or was the surgery done on an outpatient basis? How long was recovery? Could you walk normally after recovery, and wear regular shoes? What about work? I have to be on my feet for 8-9 hours at my job. How long did you have to be off work? i am in my mid 50's. not a spring chicken, unfortunately!

Scholiosis Surgery - Spinal Fusion? I had the rods put in about 10 years ago. Im now 23, with a 5 year old and I gained about 50 lbs from my pregnancy also. I am in so much pain daily! I have Sciatica, arthritis and Degenerative discs now from this! I take about 60 percocets weekly for pain. And My doctor told me a *SPINAL FUSION* might help. My question is, does anybody have this? Anybody have a *SPINAL FUSION*???? I hear you cant have kids after or ned down. Is there a surgery I can have for the sciatica? Or Pain? (I had the needles - nerve blocks they didnt work). Is there something else I can do?
Will back pain after 2 surgeries EVER get better? I had two back surgeries in '04 (discectomy & then fusion) and am STILL on pain meds. I've been on everything from Oxycontin, Vicoden, Percocet, and now daily doses of 24-hour, time-released morphine. I am resolved to the fact that the pain will NEVER go away and I'll be "crippled" with it forever. I am not an addictive person and will not become dependent on the medications. I don't know what will happen to me in the future. Has anyone else had this experience?
Back surgery!?!?!?!?!? My hubby is getting surgery on his back in a couple of weeks. A fusion of a couple of disks, and an isolation of the syatic nerves. What are some things that he will have to do to prepare for this, and does it take a long time to heal?what kind of physical therapy will he have to do? Is it something that he needs to worry alot about or can he relax and know that there will be a definate change?
I am supposed to have an artificial disc replacement surgery, but my insurance won't cover it!!? My insurance won't cover the back surgery because it is new to the U.S. My doctor recommended an alternative surgery called a fusion, but it has some downfalls to it, like limited mobility of that part of my spine. Does anyone know anything about either of these types of surgery. If so, what is your opinion on what I should do. My doc says that the fusion surgery is good but in time I could end up having to have another surgery because when they put titanium rods in my spine, it limits the mobility in my spine, thus breaking down more discs in my back. What should I do? I am in so much pain & just want to take care of it somehow. Please help.
Back around 2001 or 2002 I had back surgery or spinal surgery shortly after I developed Type 2 diabeties? I deveveloped type 2 diabeties shortly after having the fusion of 2 discs in my low back my weight grew to 172lbs and I'm 5'9" Could the 2 blood trasnsfusionsions trigger or carry the diabeties? I'm down to 155 lbs now about 150lbs is my normal weight. All sorts of wierd things went wrong after that surgery. The diabeties was the worse. I know they filter the blood pretty much but, it makes you wonder?

I have a pain in the right side of my leg , it developed after back surgery. What can I do to stop the pain? I am 20 yrs.old. I had spinal fusion L4 and L5 in july. After the surgery both my legs were numb, i had to use a walker for two weeks. I developed foot drop a week after surgery. Which eventually got better but still not perfect. Then a month ago after one of my physical therapy sessions, I developed a sharp pain on the side if my right leg. So I called my surgeon right away and he told me to stop the therapy. He perscribed me norco and darvocet which only works for an hour. Its like he gave up on me. I don't know what to do.

Cant get insurance for pre- existing condition and SSI denied me? I have had major back surgeries. Spinal fusion was the last one. I was denied insurance through my husbands work due to this. While taking Gleevec for leukemia is it possible to have a two disk fusion? If so will it hinder the fusion? I have two herniated disks in the lower back, L3-4and L4-5. I was diagnosed with CML (Chronic Myelogeneous Leukemia) and since then my doctor is resistant on doing the surgery. He researched it and he could not find any info supporting that the surgery would be effective or not. His worries are that Gleevec might hinder the fusion. He was also concerned about the blood counts (Bleeding, infection, Healing ect..). Now my counts are at normal levels and I am taking a steady dose of Gleevec 400 mg/day. My PH chromosone count was at 35% down from 97%. That was approxiamately 2 months ago. So the Gleevec has been effective but I am in a great deal of pain and I need to have this back surgery. I think I need surgery, am I right? Two years ago I had spinal fusion surgery to treat my Kyphosis. They fused four vertebra and put two metal rods (about twelve inches long) on either side of my spine. One of those rods has suddenly (and visibly) moved in my back. I don't know whether the rod broke, or a piece of my spine broke where it was connected, or it just came loose. I am in pain when I stand, walk, or sit in most positions. The pain starts where the top of the rod is and goes down one of my shoulders. Lately it has also began to tingle. All of this started last Monday and on Tuesday I went to my primary care doctor to get a referal to the orthopedic doctor. The orthopedic doctor is making me wait until this wednesday (more than a week) to see him. I think I need surgery, am I right? Is there anyway to fix this without surgery? Is it possible for the doctor to take out the top part of the rods only? Is the Doctor right to make me wait a week to see him? I don't want them to realign them. I want them OUT. If they can get messed up once they can do it again. I at least want the top section of the rods removed. It really shows (because I'm very skinny) and that's where the problem is. The rest of the rods seem fine where they are and I don't have any desire for any unnecessary cutting of my back muscles. I have reported you saturn.

Is spinal fusion a good option if your overweight? I had a Lumbar Laminectomy back surgery and that didn't work. That surgery was done in 04 on my L5 disk now they want to do a anterior and a posteriorfusion. But I'm afraid because I'm overweight and the first surgery didn't help. I don't want to keep going under the knife in fear that something may go wrong. And this is a work injury so you have to wonder if maybe the doctor's are saying surgery just because.

I have worked for my company for 11 and a half yaers. I was to have surgery for my back on Feb 13th, but it was cancelled, So I had it rescheualed for March8th, with a different Doc. I'm so looking forward to a new life. As long as I can make it through thenexted 2 weeks. t can't be any worst then the last week, 2 drug tests, and 1 urin test. Are the Ab-Lounge type machines really easy on your lower back and neck? I have had two spine-fusion surgeries but I exercise daily (powerwalking). I really need to work on my core muscles but crunches on the floor become too painful for me after a few days of them. I'd like to hear from someone with experience about this before I buy one of these machines.

The doctor said "disease of life" what does that mean? Do you know what it means when a doctor says you have a "disease of life"? My husband had a back injury a few years ago, and has had 2 back surgeries since. The last surgery was an L4-L5 fusion one year ago. Recently workers comp sent him to one of their doctors, he (the doc) mention in a statement to them (workers comp) that he may have a "disease of life"... Do you know what he meant by that? Any info would be appreciated
