How long after back surgery can i hopefully feel better? I had a disc removed and a titanium plate put in my lower back June 11th. I feel better as far as the incision goes but am curious how long until I can hope for some relief in my back. What is normal for surgery recovery on a back surgery to feel if the surgery worked.
How long does it take to recover from back surgery? This is what the report said when the results of my MRI came back: L5-S1--There is grade 1 anterolisthesis of L5 on S1. There is disc desiccation and vacuum disc phenomenon at this level as well and concentric disc bulge. Very prominent hypertropic changes involve the facets and ligamentum flavum bilaterally. The constellation of findings results in moderate-to-severe central canal stenosis and severe narrowing of the lateral recess and neural foramina bilaterally. Degenerative endplate chages are present at this level. I am only 44 and I have never had any back injuries. I am having numbness in my legs from the knees down and I am losing my coordination as well. Then there is the PAIN! In the last 3 weeks I have had to use a walker to move around. Are there other treatments for this besides surgery? If not how long will it take me to recover from surgery?
How soon can I go back to work after bunion surgery? I'm 25 years old and I'm getting bunions removed off both of my feet. My doctor said that I should fully recover after 4 weeks but I'd be able to go back to work after 2 weeks providing I wear these special orthopedic shoes (no cane or crutches required). He is doing the type of surgery where the pins will be inside the toe, not outside. Has anyone had this surgery? How long was it until you went back to work and did it hurt to walk at that point?

Thanks!
How do I plan an exercise program when i have had back surgery? I had back surgery about 3 yrs ago and it still gives me trouble. I have a hard time going 2 blocks. I really really want to lose more weight. I have lost about 45lbs through eating properly and drinking more water. I know that exercise is the key to a better life, and will help with the pain. Please help me. Thank you.
Why wont my dogs fur grow back after surgery? My dog had surgery about a year ago to remove a ruptured lipoma. The fur grew back over the incision sight, but not in the area that they shaved. He's a 14 year old Golden Retriever and is on Thyroid meds. His Thyroid blood levels are in the proper range. Is there anything else that could cause this? Thanks!!!
Has anyone had surgery on back that caused a pinching sensation in legs? I had back surgery two weeks ago and now notice a pinching feeling in my legs when I stand straight. I am curious if that is a side effect of the surgery and the healing process or if the surgery has caused a new leg pain like a pinched nerve. Does anyone know if leg pinching or weird sensation is part of surgery and will go away, thanks.
I need to find some financial help in order to have back surgery? OK, a friend of mine who is a missionary, needs to have back surgery. I've already talked with someone at the Laser Spine Institute in Tampa Florida and all they need is the assurance that this surgery will be paid for. I just need to know how and where I can get some financial help with this.
How long will it take for my tummy to get from severe swelling back to normal after a surgery? I had a surgery exactly one month ago (I had a cyst in my ovary and had to have all the ovary removed by C-section) and have been very swollen in all my lower abdominal area ever since. How much longer will it take for my tummy to get back to normal? I look fat or at least 3 months pregnant LOL and I hate it :( The whole ovary had to be removed because it had necrosis (it was black and unfunctutional, like dead); I will get the pathology results in a week to know exactly what caused this.
Has anyone had an artificial disc back surgery? I have a protruding disc in my back at L5/S1 and instead of doing a cage surgery the artificial disc is an alternative. Anyone have any knowledge or has had the surgery s I know what to expect as far as recovery and success rate for the surgery. Thanks
How do I handle a wound infection after back surgery? I am under my surgeon's care.? I developed an infection in the surgical wound in my lower back about a week after surgery. I am now on antibiotics and see the surgeon every 2 - 3 days. The wound is still discharging some blood and yellow or white liquid. Do I need to be very careful of my activities? Is this wound dangerous? Is the fact that it is still bleeding some critical? I am not sure what to think, or whether or not to be worried.
I just had back surgery and can't leave the house are there any jobs for me? I am 18 and about to enter my senior year in high school in late August. I just had back surgery and am unable to leave the house. I need a job that I can do from home on the computer that is not a scam, something that I don't have to pay to do. I need a real job, not filling out surveys or buying/selling on eBay. I also do not have a phone line to do any telemarketing.
How do i handle post surgery chronic back pain? i am 7 mos out of back surgery for rupture at L4 L5...the pain im having is a result of lots of scar tissue wrapping around the nerve root as well as other places in the leg that was most affected. Having back surgery what are my chances of a successful surgery? My husband is having back surgery. Lower back-ruptured disk that is sitting on a pack of nerves. Many, many people have said it doesn't help. Should he go ahead and have the surgery in hopes it helps him or cancel it. Please I need some answers from someone who may have had this surgery before. This is a 3 year old injury and shots will only be a waste of money and time. Physical Therapy didn't work.
About to have back surgery what can I expect? I was in a car accident a little over a year ago, I had a pre existing back problem that was retriggered, I have been through physical therapy, injections and a back brace. My orthopedic specialist informed me that surgery would be my best option. I am alittle apprehensive, but I am tired of being in pain. Can anyone tell me what to expect after surgery? What kind of lawsuit do I have? I was rear-ended on my way home from work in a construction zone.
Where can someone get micro surgery on their back? My wife is in chronic pain due to a pinched nerve in her neck. She sometimes goes in for very painful shots to help reduce the pain. The doctors just keep giving her pain medication, but nobody seems to know how to fix this. I heard of mirco surgery where a doctor and operate via very tiny incisions and with less damage and risk than with a standard scalpel. I live in AZ, but I think we have been to every back/neck specialist here, and we discovered that AZ does not have qualified professionals to deal with this, or even recommend us to someone who can help.
Will a removal surgery completely get rid of a lipoma on my back after steroids injections? I have a lipoma on my middle/upper back over my spine and it doesn't hurt. It first appeared last summer(2.9cm by 3.8cm) and my doctor injected steroids. The size was reduced a bit over the months and it doesn't seem to grow. The doctor suggested that I leave it and wouldn't do another steroids injections because it left a dimple mark with some discoloration. It's still lumpy and I don't want it. Do you think it's worth removing it surgically or leave it as my doctor said? Will it be completely gone and will I have a scar after the surgery?
Why can lower back surgery cause you to go blind? One of my loved ones is battling terrible sciatica, but she is scared of getting the surgery because there is a risk of blindness associated with the procedure that I suppose comes with any lower back surgery. Have you known of anyone who did go blind from lower back surgery? Do you know why blindness is a possibility in that kind of surgery? Is the blindness anything which can be fixed through further surgery? Thank you so much.

I had knee surgery on my left knee in july and now i just finishhed therapy and im wearing a knee brace during physical activity and now my lower back hurts very badly, my coach thinks my knee brace is casuing it. is taht possible? what else coudl be the problem?
Do you think my ovarian cysts have come back after surgery to remove them? I had larposcopy (or however you spell it) sugery done in Sept this year. I have been put on birthcontrol pills to keep my bleeding to a minimum and to keep from having painful cramps, and to keep my cysts from coming back. In the last few weeks I have been experienceing horrible pain on my lower right side, painful cramps, strong mood swings, alot of lower back pain, and fairly heavy bleeding. And this is happening in the middle of my b/c pill pack. I haven't missed a day of taking them. Is it possible that the cysts have grown back? What are other surgery options that I should discuss with my doctor other than just removing the cysts?
Has anyone had back surgery for a herniated disk? The last disk in my back is herniated. It hurts pretty much all the time if I don't take my medicine. I've been on pills for about 3 years and I really don't want to take them for the rest of my life. Has anyone had the surgery? If so what was the procedure and did it work? I've heard they do it endoscopic now too and I'm interested to hear if it works. Thanks!
Apendicitis ~ How long after surgery can you go back to work? My husbands uncle is in the hospital right now as i type this and he's having surgery at 1pm to have his apendix removed. They are going to do it with lazer surgery first and if that don't work they will do the regular surgery. He wants to return to work tomorrow. He works 3rd shift at walmart. How can I get back in shape after a surgery? I'm 15, I already had 2 hernia surgeries. I gained about 20 pounds with those two surgeries. You would think 20 pounds is a bit too much, it's because the doctor said I had to stop all active activities, so no baseball, hockey, or any kinds of sports or workouts. It was 6 months since I even was able to play baseball again. Oh wow, I have no strenght left in me:S. How can I get back in shape?
Should I get a lawyer regarding re-curring back problems, that require more surgery? I had a laminectomy & discectomy 17 days apart, now I've got to have a bi-level fusion, all within 6 mos., I've had more pain since surgery, than b 4 surgery. Then I just recently found out that the pain mgmt doc that my surgeon sent me to, that performed several epidural injections, myelogram and a disco gram, isn't even board certified to do that work, all he is , is a rehab therapist. A recent MRI, showed a re-herniation at the same level operated on twice, and they say my back is in worse shape now, than b 4 surgery. Serious answers only please.
what do you have to change about your life after lower back surgery? i had back surgery a year ago. havnt had a real bad back spasm since. *fingers crossed* but my leg is still numb on the right side. oh well..if thats the worst thing..then im lucky. but what are excercises, foods etc. that one should eat after this kind of surgery. isnt arthritis an issue after this kind of surgery? what do you do to make life better and reduce risks of pain afterwards?
What's the good and bad points about back surgery? I'm considering 3 alternatives. 1. Steroid injections for as long as they'll work 2. Spinal Fusion 3. Disk replacement Can anyone give me some really good points on the pros and cons of each decision? I'm really all over the place in what to decide. I'm afraid of steroids and the quick fix and brittle bones but I'm also afraid of surgery. So which is the lesser of 2 evils?
What could cause my left leg to go completely numb when I lie on my back? Prior back surgery? I have had 3 discectomies at L4-5 and a 1 Laminectomy at L4-5 w/ discectomy at L5/S1. My last surgery was in December of 06 and these symptoms started about 3 weeks ago. My left leg goes completely numb (all the way to the toes) and I get what feels to be SEVERE electric shocks in various parts of my leg, but only when I sleep on my back. I have tried elevating my legs, but no change. I have since started sleeping on my side, but I can't do that now because it's causing severe pain in my hips. Any ideas? I am trying to get in with my surgeon, but that may take a while.
Can a person who underwent a back surgery do bungee jumping? I had a laminectomy on S1 S2 L1 part of my spinal cord in 2001. I am just wondering whether i can attempt a bungee jumping. But i fear that in bungee jumping, when the rope reaches its limit it would pull me up but my torso would act towards gravity thus causing a pull on my spinal. And this would cause lots of strain on my back and can eventually trigger the ailment i had earlier to re occur. Any thought or answer is most welcomed
How do I get my ab muscles back after surgery? After I got my appendix out i lost my ab tone, and i gained some belly fat and it's swollen. How do i get to lose the extra belly fat and re-tone my abs? I had the surgery about 1 month ago. I'm recovered, no pain when doing crunches. Please Help =)

Back Surgery???????? I need a little advice.... I had back sugery in Oct to remove a bulging disk that was putting pressure on my sciatic{sp} nerve. well to make a long story short , soon after I started haveing the same pain as before, {sever pain in right buttock and down leg and we will not even discuss the back pain} so i went back to my doctor and he did another MRI and said that the scar tissue had grown around the nerve and that was what was causeing all the pain, put me on meds and said the only other option was surgery. So now I have been on these meds for about 6 months now and the pain is just getting worse. So I have made a appointment with him to discuss the surgery to remove the scar tissue. What I would like to know is if there is anyone else who has been thru this and if so what do i have to look forward too? How dangerous is this surgery and what if they snip my nerve will that cause perm damage? My sister had a car accident a few years ago and just stretched her nerve and now she is crippled and in a wheel chair. Should I take the chance or just keep taking the pain meds and hope it gets better. I don't see how it can get better until it is removed but I am haveing to take pain meds about 4 times a day to even be able to set up or get up to cook dinner or dishes or anything. I am SCARED and don't know what to do

Back Surgery? I am having a 360 lumbar fusion of the L4-L5 and L5-S1 surgery coming up on April 29th and I'd like to know if anyone has had this particular surgery and what the recovery period is and did it help with your back problems. I am currently taking 15 mg morphine tablets twice a day and 5 mg oxycodone 8 a day and i worry about addiction and organ damage, but as of right now i have no choice but to take it as my back hurts so bad,so that's why I'm opting for surgery
Back Surgery? OK everyone! Really stupid question, but I need an answer. Im having back surgery in September. What are some things that he will have to do to prepare for this, and does it take a long time to heal?what kind of physical therapy will he have to do? Is it something that he needs to worry alot about or can he relax and know that there will be a definate change?
Back Surgery? Has anyone else had back surgery? Do you wake up after sleeping for a couple of hours sore and so stiff you can't move? What do you do for it?
Back surgery? I have a bulging disk, I am having injections done. The Dr. says after 3 and if I am still having pain to go ahead and have surgery. I would like to hear other experiences with this.
Back surgery? I've had back pain for about 10 years resulting from a 30 ft. fall. I've exhausted every "CONSERVATIVE" approach and the pain pills don't even help anymore. The newer "minimally invasive" surgical techniques sure sound good, since they claim that even if it doesn't help, it won't put you at risk to future problems like a "Fusion" or open discectomy what do you think? What would you do?
Back Surgery? I had 5 back surgerys,3 plates n 6 screws n bone fusion, still in alot of pain on alot of medications. Doctors say they can't do anything else for me, what do I do now?
Back Surgery? Has anyone had a 2 level spinal fusion? How did your recovery go and was it a success?
Back Surgery? I just had C5 removed due to it being crushed for several years. I had C4 7 C6 fused together with a cage and some bone fragments. I am having trouble sleeping. I am not to wear the neck brace during my sleep and I am not one to lie in the same position. I sometimes wake up and find myself in the opposite direction I feel asleep in. My question is has anyone ever had this done and would sleeping in a recliner chair be bad for me? The pain in the morning is overwhelming. I am sure it's because I do not sleep motionless. I was thinking if I slept in a chair I have less room to move. Thanks for any input on this!
back surgery? im due to have two discs removed and a metal rod inserted fitted with bone graft, has anyone ever had the same operation and what was it like after the theatre, do you go in to intensive care, or do you have drips, and how long is it b4 they get you up to walk a few steps
Back surgery or not? I threw my back out, had sharp pains shoot through my legs. My doc says I might have to have back surgery. The MRI tech says to try and stay away from back surgey. My main family doc has just had her third surgery and may need to go again. I haven't heard of any success stories with back surgery. I have been told that there is no avoiding surgey if the pains or numbness in you legs do not go away, so they would have to do emergency surgery.
back surgery on elderly grandpa? My grandpa is 80 years old and has been having leg and back pain for a while. This Thursday he is having surgery on his back, he can't remember what they said was wrong or he doesn't want my family to know for some reason. He had several shots in his back, but none of them worked. Without any other choice, his doctors have decided on surgery. I'm really worried about his survival chances and how well he may heal afterward. Has anyone else's grandfather had back surgery so late in life? How well did he heal? I know this is an odd one, but how long did he live after the surgery? I'm scared and don't want to lose my grandpa, he's been the only "dad" I've ever had. Thanks for any info.

I have to have surgery on a ruptured disk in my lower back but I am only 30. Any advice on types available? I was involved in a car accident last November (Dumb @## ran a red light) and found out that I have 1 bulging disk, and 3 herniated disks. Well, the neurosurgeon recently told me that one of the disks are ruptured, which from what i take can be used interchangeably with the word herniation? Anyhow, the ruptured disc is now pinching my ciatic nerve and causing severe pain in my leg and groins. They put me on neurontin, percoset, zanaflex, and voltaren (not to mention the many stool softeners i take because of side effects from the percoset). I have also lost the reflex in my right leg, cannot lift it up much, and knee is weakening. So, they have recommended back surgery, but i am nervous because i am only 30 yrs old and have heard horror stories about back surgeries. Has anyone had a similiar experience or had a similiar surgery? What type of surgery do you recommend. My neurosurgeon does not recommend laser surgery, any advice on this?
I have Endometrosis, have had surgery.Im startin to hurt really bad again. How soon does the growth come back? I was diagnosed with Endometrosis about 3 years ago.I had surgery to remove some of the stuff growing inside.Im not like fully educated about the disease but k now that it grows back so often and causes you to start gettin really bad pain again around period times.Well I have had Lupron Shots,Depo Provera,Birth Control and surgery.I was startin to be fine for a year but now Im starting up with really bad pain again. My periods are heavy and abnormal.Clotting again and in horrible pain again before my periods are supposed to start. My cramping is so intense it's allmost unbearable,Im having horrible back pain as if I was in labor.I feel incredibly sick during this whole time.I dont eat that much cuz im in such bad pain.I was wondering how often you need to have the surgery to have it coterized so you have relief from the endometrosis until it starts growing back again. It's been about 2years now since the last surgery but im hurting really bad again and wondering if surgery is needed again

back surgery!!! ruptured disc-- how tough of a surgery is this? I am a 36 year old male in decent shape- not muscular pretty much skinny but I can hold my own, my body is toned. Spent quite a few hours behind a sledge hammer last year and received my first back injury, couldnt even walk (pinched nerve was the diagnosis)-- left me laid up for 2 wks. Now almost a year later to the day this problem comes up again. Last monday had an MRI done and got the results from my doc yesterday and he said that I need to have surgery done. He made it a point to mention that he understands how much pain that Iam feeling. I'am a carpenter and sort of afriad of this surgery -- what is the outcome???
"Back surgery"!:o? To everyone, I am going to have "2 back surgeries this summer"!:( The "1st surgery will be done to my neck"-"recoop 6 weeks"! The "2nd surgery will be lower back"-"recoop 6 months"! Because I have "mutiple sclerosis, sleep apnea, arthritis of the spine, deteriorating disks, and scoliosis" I will have to stay in the hospital longer than the "usual 6 hour out patient time"! "has anyone else out here on the web gone through a similar situation"?:O beankittyky(=^v^=)
Back Surgery and Leg Pain/Numbness? I had to have back surgery five weeks ago (L4/L5) due to a herniated disk which was causing both of my legs to feel like they were asleep. I couldn't walk without the support from the walls or another person. When I awoke from surgery, still had the numbness/tingling in both my legs. Well I'm getting more feeling back in my legs but now I am noticing some leg pain in my left leg which was not there before the surgery. Also, I am having trouble in my left leg with flexing the muscle in my calf and not being able to raise up on my toes (again, in the left foot). What I am wondering is if anyone else has had a similar experience and also if the use of those muscles has come back. I am going to see my surgeon next week and of course will be telling him all this, but I am just looking for something to tide me over until next week. Thanks!
tie back surgery, recovery time after hospitalization? I used to work at the OSU medical center and noticed alot of race horses and draft horses got a surgery that had a laymens name of tie back, it consisted of tieing back the flaps of the trachea so the horse could breath better, I'm guessing the opening of the trachea gets paralized during hard work? What causes the problem that requires this kind of surgery and how long doe sit take the horse to heal up conpletely? they don't seem to notice the surgery and behave normally dispite a nasty looking hole in the throat.
SCOLIOSIS post surgery back pain? I'm turning 24 this month but had my 1st surgery @ 13. We found it when I was 12 but my parents were JW's & didn't want me to recieve blood transfusions. It's idiopathic scoliosis, 86dg upper lumbar C-curve. If I didn't have surgery, my spine would've started rotating and I'd end up wheelchair bound. Oddly though, I'd been in gymnastics, doingbackflips-and was able to do a backbend and hold on to my ankles(VERY flexible even w/the curve!) We found it when I got sick and the DR was listening chking my back. We finally found an Orthopedic Dr. who'd perform bloodless surgery, using some kind of blood expanders and that would take place of blood....not sure on the technicalities. At 16 it felt like my rods were poking almost through my back. I had severe pain, a sharp jabbing-I knew they were broken. My parents told me they weren't since they were made of Titanium. I went to chiropractors etc, not much helped. At 19 I went to a 2nd Dr-took xrays and found a broken rod. *I wasn't done w/my Q, had to restart my comp* So they found the broken rod, & set an op. date. When the Dr. went in, they discovered BOTH rods had broken. My surgery time doubled to over 12 hrs. I used both bags of blood and my vitals were very weak. They didn't think I'd make it thru & prepped my sis for the worst (she was the only one @ the hosp). But luckily I made it. My 1st surg I stayed 2 days-this one was a wk. So it's been 5 yrs; I have extreme pain in comb w/scar tissue(inevitably from surg) and arthritis. My lower back is SO stiff/achy esp in the morn. I try to stretch always, but it doesn't really work. I don't trust chiro's w/my back-it scares me since their not specialists when it comes to this. Also, I still have alot of nerve damage, and w/my 1st surgery it took years for me to get sensation back, esp in my breasts. I know that's alot of info there, but it's the truth & if your a women I'm sure you understand.2 yrs ago it grad came back, not fully, but I'm thkful! But my question was if anyone else can relate and what do you do for relief of pain? I'm scared about getting older since I feel like I'm 50 already trying to make it out of bed. Also, I have self esteem/image issues, b/c truthfully I'm a pretty girl and have had jobs like vip cocktail waitressing in clubs and being asked to work as a dancer or other clubs or to be a promo girl for beer companies...etc...so I know others think I'm attractive, but I DON'T. I hate my body can't stand to see my back ESP when trying on clothes. I can always see one shoulder blade sticking out more than the other and if I bend down I have that hump. I know things could be alot worse & I don't want to sound vain, but this really bothers me! I make a big deal about it & feel like no guy would want to be w/me. But everytime I AM w/a guy they always say they don't care. So I guess it's all in my head, but I can't seem to come to terms? Hope some1 else feels the same way....
After shoulder surgery did you get back in the pool? Recently I had shoulder surgery. I had a torn rotator cuff and a loose tendon. I am only sixteen so the likes of me healing and getting back in the pool. However, I have talked to people who were swimmers my age that got shoulder surgery and they never got back in the pool again. Were you a swimmer who had shoulder surgery? did you ever swim again?
Major foot surgery, havent gotten appetite back.? the past week I have had a really bad sweet tooth. I had major ankle surgery 2 weeks ago, it was a four hour surgery and then I had to have a cathiter put in because I wasnt peeing. So I am on crutches for the next 11 weeks and I havnt really gotten my apitite back, but this sweet tooth is killing me. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem after a major surgery, and if anyone has any good ideas for a healthy sweet tooth snack? I know its kinda a goofy question but if anyone has any good ideas I would love it!!!

After back surgery's my back hurts much more if i sleep in my bed then on my coach with my head elevated? I have had 5 back surgery's covering the lumbar area from S1,L5,L4, L3, AND L2. All being fused in short terms, excecpt a titanium spring/cage at L4/L5 which was my first surgery. I have a sleep comfort adjustable air bed which allows you to change stiffness from very soft to hard. Even on the softest setting my back hurts a lot more then if i sleep on my couch with my head more elevaded which is more like an arch or recliner position. The QUESTION is "why does my back hurt much more when i wake up if i sleep in my bed then if i sleep on my coach???? No one i have talked to including my doctor which was highly recommented knows. I just find it hard to believe i'm the only person that has this problem. One other thing that came along with this was just minutes before i went into surgery i didn't have any problems with the top of my feet. The minute i cam to i noticed my feet, more the right then the left had a numness with an irrited feeling which i still have to this day. Please help
75+ years old back surgery? My grandmother just turned 78 and she has had back pain for about 6 months. She went to a chiropractor and she said it hurt and therefore did not go back. She is seeing another Dr. but says it is not helping. She is taking pain pills to manage the pain and she use to walk 4 miles a day until her back started hurting. She is now convinced she needs surgery. I am thinking since no family lives closer than 1 hour away after surgery she will have to go into a rehab place for a while until she recovers... I worry that at her age something could easily go wrong in surgery but I can not find enough info to support my thoughts. Anyone else been through something similar and regretted having a loved one have the surgery or was it successful and what was the recover time?
Back Surgery Advice?? I am 30 and due to have back surgery in about a month. I had a discagram last week and it was the most painful thing I think I've ever been thru. I went in and saw the results of the discagram and I was completely frightened. No wonder why I can't walk in an upright position. My bones in my spine are practically scraping one another. It's not just one disc, it's two!! I am terrified, and it seems like my doctor is trying to talk me out of surgery by saying 'there are some people that live w/ the pain their whole lives without correcting it'. The truth of the matter is that, I 'CAN'T' live with the pain. It's horrible!! I can't even just get up and walk. I have to get up slowly, and carefully straighten my back, and THEN take off. Please help me with some advice from either professionals, or those who have experienced this pain and procedure. I'm terrified outta my mind, and wanna know that the sugery will help, and that I will be ok.

Back Surgery yes or no? My wife has a bulging disk in her back and has been in constant pain for a year. She recently had three rounds of cordizone ( i think thats the name) in the spine to releave pain but, we know this is just covering up the problem. Her pain has come back after only 2 months after the shots now the options that we were given are surgery either traditional or the new laser. My question have you had either of these done, what were the results and what would you do if you had to do it again? I have been told the success with laser is higher than the traditional surgery. is this true? any insight would be great.
Back Surgery? Best Options? My boyfriend is now missing the lower three disc in his back. He's managing to pain alright, with meds and losing about 135lbs. But it's getting to the point he doesn't want to be on the meds forever and is worring about the long-term effect the meds will do. So now he's looking into surgery and wants to know his options and all the questions relating to them. He's already gone to a few doctors, but he still doesn't like the odd of recovery. He's a very active person and still wants to be able to do what he's already doing. Hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling and so on. Out of the few people he knows that have had similar back surgery, only one has full recovered. Any thing that might point me in a better direction and answers will be very much appreciated. Thanks He's been to three neurosurgeons. and he's not liking that there's a 60/40 chance of not recovering good enough to be able to do what he already does. He is actually missing the disc. Bone on bone. He's noticed that with the loss of weight it's help a lot. He's got feeling back in his legs, but he noticed he's somewhat afraid to do stuff that might make the pain worse for a few days later. He knows surgery is his best option but what one? He's looking more for disc replacement.... anyone know someone that has had this done. He's only 25 y.o. and he wants to be able to live his life.
question about recovery from back surgery? suggestion to recover from back surgery faster? i had back surgery to remove a herniated disk then was put on bed rest for 6 weeks after the surgery. now my back is super tight and painful. i just started going to rehab therapy and i am a very cooperative patient and want to get better. i am tired of the pain, the muscle cramping is almost as painful as the nerve damage sustained from the injury before the surgery. do you think it would be benificial to add massage therapy even though my insurance company won't pay for it. will it help me get better faster?
Back surgery? Has anyone had Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion surgery? I am wondering about the outcome. Did it help? How bad was recovery? How long did you have to stay in the hospital? Thanks in advance for any information. I am having the surgery. I just wondered if anyone else had this type of back surgery done. I have exhausted all non surgerical approaches. :( My choice is surgery or live with the pain. I chose the surgery. :)
numbess after back surgery? hello! I had back surgery almost a year ago after occasional bouts of back pain for the past 5 years. I would crumble over in agony about twice a year for no apparent reason..and they had to do immediate surgery when i had numbness in my leg and really weak foot muscles. I still dont have feeling on the right side of my calf muscle. I can feel my foot and have no trouble walking..but i still havnt gotten feeling back on that darned right side. Has anyone else had experience with this? i stil have some pain also..but i havnt had a really bad occurince since before surgery...so thats good news. i had a ruptured disc l4-l5 area. i had to get a laminectomy to remove the ruptured disc that was pressing on the nerve. the nerve was obviously slightly damaged since i lost full motion of my right foot: cant lift up the toes all the way. i have another slightly bulging disc...but that hasnt caused problems. The dr. said there is nothing he can do about the numbness. anyone experienced smlr
Tips on losing weight after Back Surgery? I had a back surgery about two years ago. Before the surgery I couldnt walk except with a caine. I put on about 60lbs. Then I had back surgery and lost a bout 30 lbs. Since then I have been scared to really go back to the gym. Im terrified I might re-injure my back again. Ive just started working again in the past year at a place where I stand all day. Sometimes my back and feet hurt so much I can barely move the next day but i keep on going. I want to get healthy and look the way i used to before i hurt myself and had surgery. On top of that I recently have gotten engaged. We have a year till the date and now Im frantically trying to find a way to get motivated. Im so tired from work I never have the energy. And like I said i am worried about reinjuring my back. If anyone has great advice please help!
wound care after back surgery? my mother had back surgery a month ago for spinal stenosis. After they went in they realized it was a pinched nerve and corrcted the problem (so they say), So far she has had the same pain in her back and lower extremities, she can barely walk. To add to the inconvienance, her wound is not healing up ....has anyone ever had back surgery with these problems? I feel sorry for her, but i think she's given up, she wishes for a miracle but with every surgery, she seems to get worse.
Should i get a back surgery?!? Im facing a back surgery here in the near future, my Lumbar discs {3,4,5} no longer have fluid in them, they are bulging into the syatic nerve and making me numb from the waist down, my doctor recomends the surgery but its not with out its costs. He said theres a posibilite ofnot being able to walk after the discectomy/fusion or i would have severe sensitivity or no feeling in the legs, hes very well edjucated and successfull in thease types of surgeries but the worry is still there, any stories or opnions would be appreciated. as a side note, my quiality of life would be improved ill be able to walk and pick up more then 5 pds, but thats if i dont have any complications mentioned above.
Back surgery question? I am due to have back surgery due to spinal stenosis. Is there anyone out there who has had this procedure? I live alone and am worried about managing when I come home from the hospital. Also, would anyone care to share their experience with me? Thanks. I just wanted to thank both of you for your help. I don't have anyone to help me, but I do have friends and relatives (who are all busy with their own lives) but I probably can get help if truly needed. Thanks for the good wishes, too. They're certainly appreciated. (I trust the doctor who sent me to this new surgeon implicitly.)
I need back surgery but...? my medical insurance won't cover it, because it's from a pre-existing injury. My doc says I need to figure something out VERY fast, because my condition is worsening rapidly. I have 2 herniations impinging nerve roots and am experienceing EXTREME right leg weakness. It's to the point I can't bear weight on it. I have seen surgeons who agree I need surgery asap, but with no insurance covering it, I am S.O.L. Are there any tricks to having them perform surgery on an "emergency" basis? To me, not being able to walk, is pretty darn urgent, but the one ER I went to didn't see that way. If anyone knows any tricks to get this done, or programs that can step in VERY quickly to help I would love to hear about them! I know about SS and such, but that takes months, which I don't have. My doc also said my right leg had started muscle atrophy (I think that was the word), basically my muscle was deteriorating due to my back. Thanks for any info or tricks!
I had a surgery for endometriosis in october, at first the pain was gone, but its back so whats the next step? basically, the pain was really bad for about about 6 months, even with taking oral contraceptives (which are supposed to be a big help in this condition, note:i took Low Ogestrel), i then had the surgery (it was called a microscopic laprascopy) and after that the pain went away,(i am still on the same type of oral contraceptives so as not to have my period, and it is ideally supposed to prevent the endometriosis from returning) but the pain is coming back, so does anyone know what will happen now, since i already had the surgery,as well as have been treated with medicine and neither methods have worked?
Cervical Dysplasia again! I had the surgery, its back now what? I kn ow a lot about HPV and i know it can effect my cells at anytime but the laser surgery has a 95% cure rate I guess i was n that 5 % that the dysplasia came back not even a year later? My first pap after the surgery went normal and not the second one is abnormal again with dysplasia again. I have to go through all that colposcopy stuff again, has anyone had to get the surgery done more than one time and it was a success the second time ? please if you kknow of anyone or u are the person thats had it please help,

Back surgery while pregnant? I just found out that I have a herniated disk (my fourth one) and my husband and I are trying to get pregnant. I was wanting to know if you can have back surgery while you are pregnant?
Back surgery or no?? I've had proplems with my lower back for about 5 years now. I'm a professional diesel technician, and my job is killing me. I'm already on disability from my job. I've been going to a great chiropractor and physical therapist, but I'm afraid that I'm starting to become a liability to my company. My orthopedic is suggesting surgery on L-5 and S-1. Your opinions are appreciated I'm 23. One of the disc is ruptured and is crushing the nerve on the right side of my back. I have severe weakness in my right leg and the ortho told me yesterday that there may be something wrong with my neck because I have no strenth in my right leg. My chiro thinks that the sugery might help. All they want to do is "shave" the disc where it it pushing against the nerve. I still go to my chiro. he's really good and it does help, but this is almost three years in a row that something simular has happend with my back. Each time it gets worse & it takes longer to heal each time.
Back surgery - what was my procedure called? So, when I was 16, I began having a hard time walking. I'd have pain in my sciatica, running from my butt down my right leg. I eventually had to have surgery after physical therapy and pain pills didn't work. I don't know what the procedure was called because I was young and didn't care. Now I care. Can anyone tell me what the correct name for the procedure is called? The doctor operated on my lower back, scar is about 3 inches long, in middle of back. I believe he went in and drilled away some stuff (don't know if was tissue or bone or what) that was pinching my nerves within my spinal column. Nothing was put in my back, like rods or anything. I'm now 25 and have no problems!
Back Surgery, Through the Stomach.? does anyone know where i could get some information about having back surgery through ur stomach instead of your back, I cant find any info on it anywhere.
Back Surgery in Boston Terrier? I have an 11 year old Boston Terrier who is having some problems with her back. She wobbles when standing sometimes and occasionally her rear end drops to the floor. She's not the same dog she was 10 days ago and has started the stumbling/wobbling in the last 4 days. I took her to the vet on Friday and they want to do Myelogram and CT, then I'm sure surgery will be recommended. Her mother died at 13 and her father, 13 now, is having back problems. Is it worth it to put her through this? Are there any alternatives for us~medication, chiropractic, accupunture???? :-(
Exercise After Back surgery? I had both Laminectomy and Discectomy surgery done on my back a few months ago and I have very few muscles left in my back and abdomen. I can walk short distances but my movements are slow and my back is stiff. Can anyone recommend a good source for strengthening exercises? If I joined a health club or a gym to use treadmills and equipment, is there a time on the use of these during peak times. Iā??m a little leery of joining one because I move kind of slow and worry about getting bumped into. I've done physical therapy and did core strengthening exercises and treadmills. Most exercise or weight loss site only contains information for people with no restrictions. I still do them but Iā??ve come to a standstill in recovery. The physical therapy got me going without a direction to progress to. I thought about taking a class at the local gym but with my limitations I donā??t want to slow anyone down even if it targets the areaā??s that I need to work on. Its for beginners but at the moment, Iā??m less than that.
Back Surgery--Microdiscectomy L5S1? I had it a week ago to be able to walk more than 15 minutes. It seems much worst now, lot more pain and lot less walk. Any one know of any good book or other resources on how to take care of post surgery back! Thanks
Back Surgery-Microdisectomy-L5-s1 !? Has anyone had a disk-bulge snipped ? Has it cured your pain and discomfort,eg...leg pain, ache, numbness. Pain at lower back-site, how long has it been since your proceedure.. Please be specific, surgery pending, at StlukesChicago !
Should I have back surgery or work on weight loss or get the corti shots? My back pain first started 7 years ago. I was playing racquetball for the first time in life (though I played tennis and other sports), and I quickly learned that I could not play for more than 3-8 minutes. I would attempt to return a serve and suddenly my back would lock it up. It would take forever to walk across the campus, the pain was very intense, and I would be half paralyzed. Anyway, I stopped playing. The pain and lock-ups came now and then over the years. At some points in time, I would literally be unable to move, except by dragging my body along the floor with the strength of my arms. I've been bedridden for 3 days at a time. Anyway, a year ago, I finally went to the doctor. I have a pinched nerve and a ton of arthritis (more than the doc has ever seen in patients 2x my age). He suggested a corti shot, and/or back surgery. The surgeon he sent me to was a joke, I never did get the shot. I've been on pain-killers for the past year now - I stopped taking the Anti-inflammatory meds shortly after being on them. I do not like putting drugs into my body, and after being dependent on the pain-killers for nearly 3 months, I finally cut down on those and rarely use them now. Anyway, several ppl have told me to get the shot. Others swear by the surgery. I believe that if I lost weight and strengthened my back muscles <though I can barely get thru my suggested back exercises now>, the pain could be significantly reduced, if not completely eliminated. So please help me in answering a few questions - If I get the surgery done now, will the arthritis just continue to return over the years? If I do have less fat cells and weight, could this help keep the nerve from getting pinched? - I think there would be less pressure and uncontrolled movement? What other things should I do to work on the pain/arthritis. And, I am 5ā??4 with an extra 100 pounds at a whopping 230 pounds <coming down from 250 and working on it>.
My husband is having back surgery tomorrow & Christmas is coming. We have 2 kids 8 & 14. Please help!!!!? My husband has had 2 pinched nerves for the past year and has put off the surgery to work & support our family. He has been in so much pain waiting for an O.K. to get this surgery. It is through Workers Comp. but he does not get paid for being off because it happened through a different job. He is going to have a device put in his lower back and wires in his back that will send tingling sensations instead of pain. We are not guaranteed this will even work. If it doesn't he will have to have a fussion done. He is the type of person that would do just about anything for enyone. We have been married for only 3-1/2 years. He doesn't know I am posting this. He doesn't want people knowing his personal business, but I don't know what else to do! Please help w/ suggestions or anything else you can ofer. Thanks, Ernieb
ProBoNo Back Surgery? My daughter hurt her back, she has no Ins. She has no job now because of her injury. She needs surgery. What can be done?
After back surgery and a severe postop Staph infection with need of insertion of PICC line for antibiotics my? After back surgery and a severe postop Staph infection with need of insertion of PICC line for antibiotics my life has changed. My stamina, immunity and mental psyche have all suffered. I have been unable to work since 2004. I applied for SSDI benefits yet 6 of our 15 judges (for judiciary hearings for eligibility) have been removed and placed elsewhere. I receive no monies or aid either from Medicaid or Medicare or anything else for that matter. Husband is retired and we are on fixed income. I am considered as being solvent enough to pay for $1000/mo for meds, doctors visits, and also pay a health insurance premium. After 44+ years of working as a health care professional, I have found my own care now stands in limbo. What about folks like me who are awaiting help, have no income and require regular doc visits with Rxs? I am a person with the necessary pride in America and believe this is an unimaginable problem with no solution. I appreciate any input from your venue. Thanks.
failed back surgery syndrome? Has anyone found a cure or a way to live with the constant pain other than morphine? My dr. wants to do a nerve block but has to go through the base of my spine due to the 7 inch rods in the way. He states that if it does not help then I need the rods removed. I have had the back of three vertebrae L3-L5 removed, the rods+screws+plates hold it all together. The original surgery put me using a walker for 3 months when I was 37. Has anyone had their rods removed? I would really like someone to talk to. I have since found that my original neurosurgeon has been sued 8 times since 1999, 3 times for wrongful death. I though he was a good doctor as I checked with the AMA. Now I don't know who to trust or if this nerve block is the right thing to do as I don't know anyone who has ever had one when they had harrington rods. I have also read that harrington rods are not meant to be left in, has anyone had them for longer than 3 1\2 years. Thanks in advance for the help :)
Pro's & con's of back surgery? I have a herniated disc that is killing me. I'm seeing a chiropractor, but the recovery is so long & the pain is so intense that I'm seriously considering back surgery so I can recouperate & get back to work quicker. I'd like to hear personal stories from folks who've had any back surgery; to hear your opinion. Only personal stories, please.
Who has had back surgery for a herniated disk??? Ok, I have a herniated disk in my lower back and I'm considering surgery to take care of it. I've tried physical therapy and I've had 2 "lumbar epidurals" which are basically cortisone shots given right near your nerve. Anyway, none of these has helped so far. I'm just trying to get some people's opinions on whether surgery works most of the time or not. Thanks!!!
My dad needs back surgery ASAP...HELP!? Hi, My dad is needing back surgery. He is wanting to get his disc shaved ASAP. What is the down-time when doing this? (How long will it take to recover?) Thanks!
Can a person join the army if he has had back surgery? My husband was in the army 4 years ago. In 2001 the army paid for his back surgery due to herniated discs. The surgery didnt make him better, in fact his conditioned worsened because the army docs took out the discs, but did not replace them with anything causing bone on bone friction. He got a medical discharge in 2002. 20% disabled with honorable discharge, then in 2004 VA paid for him to have another back surgery, The dr put titanium in place of the bad discs and also screws. He is nearly 100% better. He wants to go back in. The recruiter mentioned him signing a waiver, but we are worried that when he goes to MEPS they will turn him away, even though he voluntarily got out the first time. I'm just wondering if anyone here has rejoined after having back surgery???
Hi I need to have back surgery but was told i can not have it till i lose some weight? I am already doing the excercise that I am allowed and eating healthier the weight loss pills are to expensive for me anyone have some ideas good or bad ones i just really want to have this surgery and get back to work and having fun with my kids thank you so much i have been to a few chiropractor's they all said they would not touch me because it could do to much harm instead of good and i tried a deep massage therapist but that just made it hurt more i do water a robics once a week and a stretching kinda cardo routine from the physo people everyday i tried doing the walking becasue had a lot of succes with that before but the pain is to great and the meds only help enough to get me through the day i have disc degerative disease which my doc said is just a fancy way of saying your back does not want to heal its self and he said some is from my weight but it is mostly hereditary so is my bad spelling lol
