What are your thoughts on teenagers receiving weight loss surgery? Denies the real problem or life saving? After recent increases in the number of teenagers getting gastric bypasses and other types of surgery, it is widely becoming accepted quickly. However, is it right? Do you think if it saves lives, of course! Or, alternatively, do you think that these kids should approach weight loss from a wholistic perspective (dealing with their emotions through psychological counselling, complimented with education about proper nutrition and exercise?)
how heavy do you have to be to be elidgable for weight loss surgery in order for insurance to cover it? im 21 5'7 and weigh about 250 pounds, also if i am what is available for me as far as types of surgery goes?
What are the negative/positive side effects of weight-loss surgery? Please tell me what type of surgery you had (band, gastric bypass, etc.), plus the pros and cons, if you would. I would be so grateful! Thank you =)
What are the risks of dieing during weight loss surgery? Are they hight? Give me a percent... The type of surgeries im talking about are like a stomach staple or sleeve and liposuction ..
Does anyone know about Fidelis Care NY Health insurance coverage on weight loss surgery? Is there anyone with any info if fidelis covers this and if so what type of things d they require you to do in order for it to be covered?
WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY? I am considering having bypass surgery to loose weight. I have been fat all my life and I'm now 50 and weigh 300 lbs. Can anyone who has had this type of surgery please tell me about it. Did it work for you? Would you do it again? Did you have complications? How much weight did you lose? How did it affect you mentally? I just want to feel "normal" for once in my life. Thanks for sincere answers. 20 minutes ago - 3 days left to answer. Additional Details 8 minutes ago More info: I have spoken with my family doctor who has seen my struggle but I will be going to see a specialist in Atlanta on Sept. 20th and will decide after that. I am 5'6" 6 minutes ago Also I have tried to loose weight so many times. I joined a wellness center and worked out hard for 2 1/2 hours daily and the weight barley budged. I'm about as frustrated as a person can be. I just want to got other opinions before I make such a drastic decision. Thanks

Are more insurances covering weight loss surgery? Since there have been new breakthroughs (such as studies proving that diabetes disappears before most of the weight loss), and since Medicare and Medicaid have started paying for gastric bypass surgery as a "cure" for diabetes, are more insurance companies covering this procedure? Before I am chastised for wanting to take the "easy way out", let me assure you that this is most definitely NOT the easy way. Obesity, diabetes, many different types of cancer, heart disease, etc., run rampant in my family. I am insulin resistant, meaning the weight won't come off with dieting. I am 25 years old. Due to a total knee replacement at age 16, my weight has ballooned. I am unable to exercise, as just bending my knee while sitting grates bone-on-bone. I am 5'3 and weigh 275 lbs, with a BMI of 48.7. I have considered this for 7 years. I've watched my mother struggle with her own WLS and she has come out on top. Adversely, I have watched my aunt eat her way back to where she began after WLS. My insurance is Humana PPO, and on the back of the card it says Choice Care Network.
what type of surgery has laila ali had? Someone told me she had some type of weight loss surgery after gaining weight
Weight loss, what are some non invasive "Surgery" type options? Such as a stomach band...? Looking to lose lots of weight, and I think something like a stomach stapeling is what im shooting for, except i dont want something totally permanent. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!
Has anyone had the lap band surgery for obesity and weight loss? In most cases it is a day-surgery, so I've read. How long is recovery or what type of complications? This lap band surgery is supposedly less invasive than gastric bypass. I have years of yo-yo dieting and I'm over 100lbs my ideal weight with a lot of health problems that are exacerbated by being overweight.
i need the name of three type of weight lot surgery? lapband and what is the other two weight loss surgery
Anyone heard of lap-band surgery for weight loss? if so is it expensive? I have type 2 diabetes and have tried many diets to lose weight ..only to fail repeatedly.would like to try the lap-band surgery, but am hesitant to do it ...I am curious as to what it actually does to help you lose weight.
Anyone with type 2 diabetes had the lapband surgery to help with their diabetes and weight loss? have been thinking about getting the lapband for some time now...hoping someone who has had it done could give some information on it...the details and such ...cost...recovery time any information would be greatly appreciated...
Question for those who have had a gastric bypass? Or some type of weight loss surgery. What are the pros and cons of having this surgery in your opinion? And would you recommend it to others? RELEVANT, RESPECTFUL ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE.
I want to either get a blonde mohawk or a black buzzcut or shaved head, what works for a country boy/rocker? I also need some good weight advice and what would be better to do do it normally or use a weight loss pill or some type of surgery, because I'm only 16 years old.
How do i get rid of the fat in the back of my head? alright, i have a role in the back of my head, not neck but head, what type of exercises can i do to strengthin that part of my head and get it to go away. and please do not say general weight loss, or surgery.
Weight loss and skin sagginess? I know when women lose weight sometimes their breasts get - the skin saggy etc. What I was wondering was about men. I assume they would suffer the same type of skin sagging around the waist, butt or where ever - but frankly I've never run seen a guy who lost a LOT of weight. So what is the story any of you who know about such things. And, is there anything that can be done about it short of cosmetic surgery?
Online obesity support groups? Specifically for those who are morbidly obese- anyone know of any? I am looking for a friendly group of people online - a type of online support group - to befriend through a weight loss journey. I am currently doing a hospital-sponsored program (Optifast), so I have no online support. I am quite shy, so I am fond of online support in addition to local meetings. Some examples are the medifast / nutrisystem / dottisweightlosszone / weight watchers websites... I can't find anything specifically for Optifast patients or just people who need to lose a LOT of weight - AND when I look, I find nothing, but information about weight loss surgery. Any help would be great. I've appreciated online support and friendships online before, but I can't seem to find a nice place to start now. Thank you in advance, Kaliope I prefer a group with posts daily; sadly the one listed by the first answerer has not been used since January 2007. thank you:)

I may need some weight loss help? Age: 18 years old height: 6ft 1in weight: 242 lbs My questions are... What is the average weight for an individual of my height? How soon can I loose 20-30 pounds starting September 1st within 3-6 months? If that sounds a bit unrealistic, which I completely understand, then how soon can I loose 20lbs within 6 months I do have a relatively decent amount of muscle mass but my fat is 27%-30% of my body- i checked Recently I have been working out at home doing bicep curls, triceps and a little bit of my back. My biggest problem is I do not have the ability to run due to a surgery which happened one month ago By early September it seems like I should be getting back on my feet, what do you re-co the type of food I should stay away from, how many hours per week i should hit the gym/ days. I also work 80 hours per week as a stockbroker so its a heck of a lot tougher then you folks think :) ... Thanks for the info, very much appreciated
Weight-loss and Pre-Pregnancy? After a recent surgery my doctor recommended that I try to get pregnant within the next couple of months. I know that I need to lose 15 lbs (or more would be better) but I am terrible with diets. I am walking about 30 minutes in the evening but I need a "Diet for Dummies" type of help. NO DIET PILLS!!! Does anyone have any suggestions?
Should we persue a lawsuit? My wife and I are overweight, my wife went to a back doctor for back pain who humiliated her, would only discuss weight loss surgery and never examined her back (didnt look at or touch it). When asked for a manger was sent a nurse manager who went back into losing weight. Then called her at home to tell her she was worried about her so they called her primary care facility, and then after my wife told her she was lucky she was not the type of person to take this action to heart, that someone else (with no self esteem etc) would have likely went home from this experience and contimplated suicide (said this to make a point) they called the cops, didnt give a name, and the police report says my wife was upset about her weight so she said she may kill herself". Do we have a lawfuit for discrimination and harassment, and if so, how do we find a lawyer? THANKS!
As a society, have we gone completely mad? Last year, over 200,000 Americans had weight loss surgery. www.asbs.org/Newsite07/resources/press_release_cbn_11107.pdf Over nineteen million Americans have Type II diabetes, and of these, an estimated 78% have a body mass index in excess of 35, and thus are considered eligible for weight loss surgery. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/23/health/research/23diabetes.html?_r=1&oref=slogin At approximately $30,000 a pop, the cost of performing surgery on every one of these individuals would be well in excess of 400 BILLION dollars. Before we go any farther down this road, maybe we ought to step back and take a look at where we are going. We live n a society in which cutting open an individual's abdominal cavity and rearranging his intestines is considered "normal," and the idea of expecting an individual to exercise a modicum of self-control is considered, well, crazy. I repeat: have we gone completely mad? A third-generation freethinker To Primordius Drool: We are also the descendants of people who evolved brains precisely so they could recognize that circumstances had changed and adjust their behavior accordingly.
Gastric bypass surgery? My hb wants this surgery. If you look at the low end of his ideal weight, he's about 95 lbs overweight, however considering his body type, I'd say he's more likely about 75-80 lbs overweight. He has given up on correcting his eating habits & sedentary lifestyle and decided that his only recourse is surgery. He also has backaches, high blood pressure & a family history of cancer. He has badgerred his physician so much that he has referred him to a specialist for consideration for the surgery. He doesn't even want to lose weight now for fear he won't be a good candidate. I am so upset and concerned about this major surgery. I think he can accomplish his weight loss through modifiying his diet and getting some excercise. I have told him that I can and will help him in both areas. I'm not overweight at all, so maybe I'm not as understanding as I could be, but I believe he could do this himself...without surgery. Has anyone had the surgery or been on my end? Any suggestions?
Why do people spend so much time trying to fix flaws, instead of living life? So many people I know spend so much time, effort, suffering, money, memberships to clubs and websites, to deal with certain problems, like balding/hair loss, plastic surgery, weight loss, etc,and waste years sometimes decades in trying to "fix" problems they percieve as being in the way of them living life! These people think, "If I was only 30 lbs lighter, if my hair was only thicker and my hair line was better, if my teeth were whiter, if I only got that outfit," and they like maniacs, type about 5000 entries in internet websites!" Even people that worship celebrities, and certain subjects like history. They go on and on and on and on, and waste their lives away, and yet when they see other people out there who have these flaws, yet dont' seem to care and are happy, they get all bent out of shape and try to stop that person from being happy. Happens to me ALL the time! I have flaws, yet I TRULY don't give a shit. Why the hell are people this self-conscious?

If your wife got plastic surgery, would you care? I've read that some guys are subconsciously less attractive to women who have been cosmetically altered or enhanced. I'm 31, been told I'm attractive, I'm the type to rip myself apart though LOL Anyways, I've always hated my nose, it's too big for me, and no one else sees it as a problem, but I figure I've waited 31 years, I went through teenage years and everything else and it still bothers me. I've found out I may need surgery for a deviated septum to help my breathing and I figured why not have it altered since I'm getting surgery anyway? He says I don't need it but doesn't say much else. The biggest thing though is I've lost 100 pounds so far and am losing my last 25 now, to get to 5'8, 135. I was a 'D' cup when we met, I'm now a 'C', but to me not a nice 'c'. I can't go anywhere or do anything without a bra because after a significant weight loss, they lose shape. I don't want them bigger I just want them fuller and shapely. He again says I don't need it, it doesn't bother him, but it bothers me. I don't want to always have to wear a push up bra or demi cup and search for special bathing suits to 'support' me. So I want to have gel implants done to be a fuller 'c' or small 'd'. He said he isn't sure he would like it, if he would care that they weren't real anymore. I really want to do it for myself but I don't want him being less attracted to me. I would not in any way get addicted to plastic surgery, I have stretch marks and I don't care about stuff like that, it's not about perfection. Guys what would you think of your wives doing it? Well considering our children do support two other children through World Vision, I don't feel as guilty. We also try and support charities and the homeless on our own turf too. MAD you can call it pathetic all you want, but you're not a woman, you don't know what it's like for women who dont have boobs let alone what its like for women to have them then lose them like I have. So do you condemn women for getting implants when they have lost them to cancer or is it okay then? Yoda you can make an opinion about someone from a yahoo question? Congratulations, you should become a professional profiler online. If you were so good, you would realize that I don't give a crap about other people's opinions about me, except my husband, hence why I asked males point of views about thier OWN wives, not about me personally. I defend myself for being called pathetic or greedy or people assuming I don't care about world issues. That is you and other people making judgments about me based on a question and then call me insecure for defending it. As for therapy, again you have no idea about me. If you did, you would realize I have not only overcome eight years of an abusive relationship to become an assertive instead of passive person, that I have overcome daily anxiety, I now help people with OCD having dealt with it myself and have also overcome agoraphobia, so I am quite secure in myself or else I wouldn't have been able to do all that, it's strength in myself that has done that. I am now at a place where I can say I love myself, all of my flaws but I also knwo what I can do to increase my confidence physically and so be it, if its available, great. It doesn't make me shallow or insecure or greedy and narcisstic. As for wanting people to endorse my opinion, you missed the point of the question entirely. I want other husbands' opinions on how they would view thier wife, to help me understand mine and his views. Its debating with my husband and seeing outside views, not being endorsed, but thanks anyway To add, I don't even like being on top without a bra on because of the way they hang down, there is no fullness there anymore and it's really unattractive. You'd be pissed that someone got plastic surgery instead of feeding you in the United States? Get off your ass and feed yourself, I'd be more pissed someone had to feed me than didn't. wth who said anything about tummy tuck? i dont need a tummy tuck, and you missed the entire point if you still think its about perfection. Perfection would mean I had to get rid of my stretch marks or fine lines i'm starting to get or this or that and I dont care about those things, so how is that about perfection? I just want back what I used to have before weight loss. ugh men lol
What types of sports or hobbies can I take up to tone and/or flatren my butt, thighs and stomach? Genetically I have big thighs and a big butt and I hate it, it doesnt help that my thighs have stretch marks 2! I REALLY want to flatten them and tone them, I'm also on a weight loss program. I'm walking 2 and from school, PE three times a week, one hour on the exercise bike a day BUT I need something that will tone and/or flatten them. I've heard that walking up steep hills and doing step-ups will tone your thighs but does anyone else know of any others? And could someone please give me advice on getting rid of stretch marks, I'm desperate and I hate them so much! Would plastic surgery help?
Does anyone know of a good plastic surgeon in Tampa FL that specializes with Bariatric Patients? I need to have a 'tummy tuck' done due to a 95 lbs weight loss after lapband surgery, and from what I've seen in the Rate MD websites, it's slim pickens of a decent plastic surgeon for this in Tampa FL. (for that matter, it's slim pickens for any type of decent doctor in the Tampa Bay area...especially ob/gyn's....I seem to have been lucky enough to have found all of the molesters, incompetants and drama queen doctors in the area....If you'd like a list of whom to stay far away from, email me, I'd be more than happy to share this info and protect someone else from being physically & emotionally hurt, and almost killed due to negligence and total imcompetance.)
Best way to target problem areas? ? I'm just wondering if any of you out there can tell me what the best exercises would be to lose fat in my problem areas. My main problem areas are my stomach, my upper arm (wings, lol), my hips, thighs, butt and back. I'm really curious as how to get those little fat rolls off of your back. Like what types of exercises to do for that and whether to use small weights or not. I'm currently on a weight loss journey, and let me just say, I'm thrilled with the results so far. I started my new lifestyle of eating healthier, smaller portions and exercising back at the end of September and so far have lost 33 lbs but since I got so large before, I'm afraid I'm going to have a lot of loose skin. Is there anything that can be done about that other than some type of surgery? Any rude comments will be overlooked and reported. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks so much!
What is the procedure to repair a cyctocyle and rectocyle? I was diagnosed with this plus something else (entocyle maybe?) I went to a Uro-gynocologist for a diagnosis and to see what my options are. He was very rude, barely spoke to me and gave me the bums rush out of his office ending the visit with "You're FAT and I wouldn't touch you unless you lost at LEAST 50 lbs." Well I've lost 82 lbs since this visit, but I would never go back to this jerk and I've given him bad ratings on every 'rate your doctor' sight on the internet. I was wondering if weight loss cures these conditions? Also if anyone has had this type of surgery please let me know how it went and what the recovery time was. Thank you!!

Has anyone on here with diabetes gotten pregnant this way? A friend of mine with type 2 diabetes lost over 150 on a liquid diet (no surgery). She took herbal supplements from GNC for weight loss, drank liquid vitamins and minerals, efa (an other stuff that I can't remember), exercised, and eats an extremely low carb diet. She is now pregnant, and has increased her caloric intake but only in the form of protein shakes. She's extremely scared of eating to many calories for fear of gaining to much weight back. I told her to eat alot of salads, and protein in the form of beans. She said she's going to the nutritionist next week. Is she wise to continue her extremely low-carb diet? Opinions please.
Can someone help me proof read my English paper? What do you think the thesis is or can you help me write a good thesis Body Image Obsession Today‘s society is heavily focused on the physical aspect of our bodies. It is hard not to pay attention to the way we look. In the United States the value of being thin has been the predominant stereotype for women. The problem is that some women go the wrong way about obtaining that image and even go to the extent of hurting themselves to reach the ideal look. Cultural and media reinforce the belief that women should be more concerned with their appearance. Society plays a massive role in influencing our lives and our judgments. In western society the idea of having a perfect body type has become an obsession. Never in history has body image standards had so much impact on society. The solution to ending America’s obsession with thinness is a change in cultural attitudes. In every society, people use their appearance as a way to express their social relationships. American culture portrays certain morals and ideas that women feel they must live up to. The media plays a significant role in our cultural impressions about our bodies, most of our body insecurities are set on us by the media. Everything on it focuses on appearance. Women are under constant pressure to fit a certain idea of beauty. Seeing images of flawless, thin females makes it hard for us to feel good about our bodies. Teens compare themselves with images of models featured in magazines, and that may lead to negative feeling about their bodies. The negative effects about media advertisements not only include the pursuit of cosmetic surgery but it also includes a whole range of disordered eating habits. Eating disorders include extreme attitudes, emotions, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues; they can be experienced by both men and women. Starvation diets, pill, juice drinks, and other rapid weight loss techniques are usually the starting point to eating disorders. The two most common types of eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes an eating disorder characterized by low body weight and body image distortion with an obsessive fear of gaining weight. Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent “purging”. The most common form practice of people with bulimia is self induced vomiting and the use of laxatives. Some factors that can contribute to eating disorders are low self-esteem, lack of control in life, depression, anxiety and strong need to please others. People with eating disorders see something entirely different when they look in the mirror. Eating disorders are most successfully treated when diagnosed early. People with eating disorder most of the time do not recognize or admit that they are ill; as a result they resist to getting or staying in treatment. Today’s society is heavily focused on the physical aspect of our bodies. There is no such thing as an “ideal” or “perfect” body. Trying to achieve the “perfect” female body image seen on TV and magazines is leading an increasing number of teens to develop eating disorders. Because of our society description of beauty, we are lead to thinks we are not pretty or sufficiently handsome. Women need to stop allowing themselves to feed into what society considers an acceptable appearance and start becoming what they were meant to look like.
10 points!!!!!!!!summarize please? With no magic weight-loss pill available and more focus on the increasing rate of obesity among adults, people struggling with obesity are turning to surgery, especially procedures that have become less invasive. For local surgeons and hospitals, that demand translates into a growing business for bariatric — stomach reduction — surgery. Some Bay Area hospitals and medical groups that have performed the surgery for a few years are now expanding, hiring more surgeons and buying more equipment geared for operating on people who weigh as much as 600 pounds. "There are more people understanding the significance of the health risk," said Dr. Mary Estakhri, director of minimally invasive surgery for ValleyCare Health System in Pleasanton. "Years ago, it was seen as incredibly drastic or it was seen as taking the easy way out. But now, frequently patients know other people who have had it, and it's more of a reality." Since 2000, Estakhri has performed stomach reduction surgeries at ValleyCare with laparoscopic surgery, a technique that is less invasive. The health system recently hired another surgeon since officials expect a 25 percent increase in bariatric patients over the next year. The procedure involves inserting a small camera in the surgical area through a small incision, and surgeons view the area on a video screen. They operate with instruments inserted through other small incisions. In the last three years, stomach reduction surgeries have almost doubled, increasing from almost 37,000 in 2000 to over 63,000 for the year ended in June, according to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. About 90 percent of those surgeries were performed in this country. Given average surgery costs of $25,000, that translates to more than $1.4 billion spent on bariatric surgery in the United States in the most recent year. And though many insurers cover it, some only cover a specific type of bariatric operation. It is not uncommon for patients to foot the bill themselves, hospital administrators say. For instance, 20 percent of the patients who have had stomach reduction surgery by Drs. Robert or John Rabkin in San Francisco pay for the surgery themselves, according to their office. Demand for surgeries in the future is expected to remain strong, though it's hard to say what it will be exactly since the decision to undergo the procedure is a personal one. The surgery is meant for morbidly obese people or those people at risk for diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and back problems. About 16 million people in this country are morbidly obese, or at least 100 pounds overweight. "It's a service line that for most hospitals is profitable at this time," said Ken Steele, CEO of St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. A combination of factors make the surgery more popular now, Estakhri and others say. In the last few years, celebrities including singer Carnie Wilson and NBC weather forecaster Al Roker have had stomach reduction surgery. And national attention has spotlighted the fact that more Americans are obese and that obesity is a high risk for diabetes, hypertension, a host of back problems and ailments like sleep apnea. Dr. John Feng, part of Laparoscopic Associates, a practice in San Francisco headed by Dr. Gregg Jossart, frequently sees patients at satellite offices in Petaluma and Eureka. Three surgeons in the practice perform three kinds of laparoscopic surgery on at least 200 patients a year, mostly at California Pacific Medical Center. The surgeons hold online chat sessions with patients to help them with questions about their recovery. "It's such a growing field right now that I think it will drive a lot of doctors to get this expertise especially in laparoscopic surgery because patients specifically look for that," Feng said. "It's not unusual to have patients come into the office who have read a lot about this surgery and they come into the office and ask" for a specific kind of surgery. "Unless we can find the underlying problems causing obesity, and those are multifactorial, I think it will only grow," Feng said of the demand. The surgeries reduce the size of the stomach and the rate at which calories are absorbed. So after surgery, a person does not want to eat as much. Results of the surgery vary but a person can lose anywhere from half to at least 70 percent of their excess body weight over a period of a year or two following surgery. The surgery can be especially beneficial for adults under age 60, Feng said, because it often enables them to get off expensive medication. Earlier this year, St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco spent about $500,000 to equip an operating room with special tables and equipment. CEO Ken Steele has been engineering a turnaround for the Catholic Healthcare West hospital, which is close to breaking even after losing more than $12 million in 2001. What's the best way to get lean muscles? Bit of an exercise problem... Read below.? Specifically in your thighs and stomach. I'm not really worried about weight loss, more about loss in inches. However, I want to create lean muscles while losing the weight. Kinda like a dancer's body. I was in something similiar to dance for 3 years and started to get this body style, but I haven't been in it for about 2 years now and I've lost the body I created. There's a problem though... When I was involved in this activity, I did a lot of running, which greatly helped with the toning. The reason I got out of it was because I had surgery on my achilles tendon. It has been a little over 2 years since my surgery but it hasn't fully healed. Meaning, I find that if I run over a mile (if I can make it that far) I can barely walk afterwards, let alone the next day. It's usually more of a weight distribution problem than a movement problem... but I haven't done enough experimenting with running/cycling to really find out. What do you suggest to get that body type back?
The CONS of birth control pills (Yaz)? First off, I'd like to say that I'm 100% sexually inactive. Secondly, I'm the type of person who is very anti-medication & never takes Advil for a headache because it's bad for your kidneys & liver. So, my gyno doctor perscribed me Yaz for a few small cysts outside of my ovaries. I told her I didn't want to be on birth control medication because I was sexually inactive, and I've heard about some TERRIBLE side effects to birth control, such as birth defects in offspring after being taken off the pill, weight gain/loss, etc. She told me that Yaz didn't come with those side effects. I kind of don't know whether or not to believe her. But it's not like I have a choice, because the only other option for removing my cysts is expensive surgery (or at least, that's what she told me.) So aaaaanyway, all I need is a second opinion on the side effects of Yaz. I've tried Googlin' it, but I can't really find anything. My main concern is birth defects, 'cause I want to have kids someday.

Can someone help me proof read my english paper? What do u think the thesis is or can you help me write a good thesis Body Image Obsession Today‘s society is heavily focused on the physical aspect of our bodies.
