Cost Of Open Heart Surgery Knowledge Base
Anyone have an idea of the cost of open heart surgery for aortic stenosis on a 2 year old? I found out my daughter had this when she was 1, but a mild case. Just went to her 1 year visit and found that there is now a membrane that has grown and that extra strain of blood getting through besides the issue already (biocupse leaflets)...this is causing a slight build up on the wall of the left side of her heart and her risk level has gone up slightly. The doctor is going to monitor her now every 6 months, but says the probabilty of surgery is pretty high and before she gets much older. I have insurance, however will have out of pocket expense of course. Would like to have an idea of the overall cost of this so I can start saving for the % that I know I will have to pay. I can't find any "estimates" stated anyway on-line.
Open heart surgery on an infant? What are the costs of an open heart surgery on an infant in America.. I am trying to sponsor a child that needs to have this surgery done because they can not do it in the country that this child is from.. I know that my insurance will not cover him * 5 month old boy * is there a free clinic around that would operate on him and where can i go for help regarding this matter.. I am desperate.

Have you had the baconater at Wendy's? As if fast food is not unhealthy enough, Wendy's invented a burger called the baconater. Sadly, my husband enjoyed the name they had chosen and ordered it. I on the other hand ordered a salad (OK, and a frosty). This sandwich had two layers of meat, cheese, and a ton of bacon. It had NO tomato, lettuce, or onion. So, not only are they going to load you with fat, but they are going to take off the lettuce (just in case the bacon and slabs of meat don't kill you). Of course, he didn't eat it....huge waste of $4.00...but I suppose it is cheaper than the cost of open heart surgery. I guess I just needed to vent, but how do these chains come up with these things and still feel good about themselves? It's like the Apollo burger....It's a hamburger, but then they throw ham on with it - which just makes it even harder to bite into. Flavio, don't tell Curry...she'll be mad at me. I will jog an extra 30 minutes tomorrow if you promise not to tell. Margaret - a Jr. Frosty only has 4 grams of fat and 140 calories, much less than the baconater. How are people actually against universal health care in America? It's hard to believe that people would actually be against universal health care and regulations on the health care industry. My parent friends were just telling them about their son who needed open heart surgery when he was 1 which cost $100,000. After that it was very difficult to get him health insurance and it cost so much, they couldn't even divulge how much it was. Now he's 18 and needs open heart surgery again and it's going to cost them $200,000!!! What would someone who's against universal health care tell them?
In regard to my mom being in a nursing home? My mom is 82.Had open heart surgery.We live in chicago ill. The policy's here in ill are differnt than in other city's. Mom own a house which is paid up. I'm a cosigner as of the last 2 years.Up until the last 2 years my name was not on anything.Not on the house or any of her bank money.I hired a lawyer to put my name on these documents which costs me 2000 thousand dollars. Now i am paying over 4 thousand dollars a month for her to be in a nursing home.Ever since her open heart surgey she has not been able to walk the way she use too .On top of that her eye sight is bad & her hearing is very bad.She doesnt want to be home alone.I do live with her but am not & cannot stay with her.Its very stressful to take care of her on top of everything else.I have very bad arthrits of the knees.My knees swell up like a balloon & my hips ach & feet swell.I'm only 42 but i feel bad myself.I cant work.I cant be on my feet.I know i could something but my skills are also limited & have no education.

Looking for a soultion for my little brothers problem with Marijuana, any ideas? Hello all my name is Josh and I am in the military and have been for 6 yrs, so having been through boot camp, I thank that would be a great solution for my brother. He is direspectfull, and does as he pleases and thinks about no one but himself, most of all he loves marijuana more than anyone or anything, and its gonna get him into trouble. My mother and father wanted me to seek out a boot camp for troubled youth and thats not hard the issues is this, they all cost lots of money. Both my mother and father work, but my father had a heart attach 2 days ago and is scheduled to have open heart surgery tommorow, so money is this issue. With that being said does anyone know how we could seek assistance from the gov't, state, etc... my father was the money maker but he will be off his feet aprox. 2 months, and now funding is the problem. My cat pants / breathes with open mouth when exerted- she had surgery and is now breathing open mouthed- help! I have a new cat (almost a year old) that pants heavily with her mouth open when she plays a lot and is exerted. She also purrs VERY loudly, almost a snoring-noise, when she's sleeping. Well, she just went in to be declawed and spayed/neutered, did fine right after the surgery, and now the Doc says she's breathing with her mouth open, which causes him concern. I told him she does that when tired out, and he says this is a red flag... it could just be asthma (which he says is quite rare in cats) or possibly an enlarged heart. Which is more likely? We're newly married and have very little income to spend on vet bills... is it worth keeping her? Will it cost us a billion dollars to keep her healthy or should I give her to someone else? Does anyone have any other ideas of what it could be? The cat is only a couple months new to us... I don't want to give her away b/c she SNORES or breathes with her mouth open!!! I'd give her away b/c if it's something MAJOR like a big heart problem, I wouldn't be able to afford proper medical care! Hello every one, i am after any information for my friend, She has 2 children, and one of them is 5weeks old and has already had major surgery on his stomach and later he will be having open heart surgery. I just want to know how i can start up something to get some donations for her to help pay for any medical cost and other things she may need for her child? When she was pregnant they found out threw ultrasound that her baby's stomach was on the wrong side of his body, that's why he had the operation because it twisted and it could have killed him, then after he was born they found out that he has an ATRIAL SEPTAL DEFECT (a hole in his heart) and a little later he will need to have open heart surgery, although his stomach is doing good for now there is a high chance that it could twist again which can lead to major problems. Need help w/ family and financial problems? I've been laid-off from where I used to work for about a month, and I'm looking for another job. I live with my Mom and Stepdad, and during that month my stepdad had a five bypass open heart surgery operation. The insurance he had isn't good at all, we haven't yet got the actual surgery bill, and we already owe around $60,000 or more. I already gave them $3,000, to help, but that isn't even putting a dent in the amount owed. My real Dad has an apartment close to where he lives, and I was wondering should I stay with my Mom, because until I find work, I'm actually costing them more money on insurance, groceries and all the other things? Or should I take what little bit of money I have and move into the apartment and hopefully find work, so that they don't have the extra expenses that I can't fully pay right now, and that would lower their expenses? I will tell you all in advance thank you, for your answers and hopefully you can help me make a decision.
help with lazy inlaws? ok, heres my problem, my father&law went in a couple months ago for emergency open heart surgery. Everything went great, & he's home now. But heres the kicker, he has a nurse come out for 1 hour a week. Then everything else is left up to my husband & I. His wife, & his daughter, who lives right around the corner refuse to help him out at all. See he had to sign th epapers in order for her to get teh damn house, & his wife, who has $$ bought the house for her. She refuses to even help out her family in ANY WAY. Instead shes either at home sleeping, like her mom, or out partying at all hours of the night. Now on to us, we live 30 mins out of the way, we told her that it CANT be ALL up to us, the $$ in gas is costing us, & that as his wife, & daughter its time to start helping him. Only to be told "he's not there proiordty (Sorry mispelled). So then she said she'd give us gas $$, well, what does she give us, but $1.00 in gas $$ (were 30 mins away from them, 1 dollar isnt going to get me across the street). His wife keeps telling everyone, hes not her problem, she has other stuff to do. He other stuff people is either sleeping 23 hours a day (I KID U NOT), or shopping. She even refuses to take him to his doctor appointments. I have even gone as far as calling the department of aging twice to turn her & her daughter in, & have got nowhere. Noone here can do anything, UNLESS itsworked around his damn scheduel, emanign, liek lastnight, we were going to go out to eat, his dad called, to see how come we wernt over at his house, I told him, were going out to eat, only to be told, "hey, missy, you guys didnt ask our permission to go out to eat did you? I went off, & told him look, your son is 42, & Im 34, We DONT need your permiossion to do shit! And I hung up on him. Were at our wits end, noone here is sleeping, nothign is getting done, we even homeschool our son ,& he's got to be schooled thrhgou the summer too, becuase he was short a few a few points, & they told me too bad, they need us. Skeptics have contended that studying prayer is a waste of money and that it presupposes supernatural intervention, putting it by definition beyond the reach of science. At least 10 studies of the effects of prayer have been carried out in the last six years, with mixed results. The new study was intended to overcome flaws in the earlier investigations. The report was scheduled to appear in The American Heart Journal next week, but the journal's publisher released it online yesterday. In a hurriedly convened news conference, the study's authors, led by Dr. Herbert Benson, a cardiologist and director of the Mind/Body Medical Institute near Boston, said that the findings were not the last word on the effects of so-called intercessory prayer. But the results, they said, raised questions about how and whether patients should be told that prayers were being offered for them. "One conclusion from this is that the role of awareness of prayer should be studied further," said Dr. Charles Bethea, a cardiologist at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City and a co-author of the study. Other experts said the study underscored the question of whether prayer was an appropriate subject for scientific study. "The problem with studying religion scientifically is that you do violence to the phenomenon by reducing it to basic elements that can be quantified, and that makes for bad science and bad religion," said Dr. Richard Sloan, a professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia and author of a forthcoming book, "Blind Faith: The Unholy Alliance of Religion and Medicine." The study cost $2.4 million, and most of the money came from the John Templeton Foundation, which supports research into spirituality. The government has spent more than $2.3 million on prayer research since 2000. Dean Marek, a chaplain at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and a co-author of the report, said the study said nothing about the power of personal prayer or about prayers for family members and friends. Working in a large medical center like Mayo, Mr. Marek said, "You hear tons of stories about the power of prayer, and I don't doubt them." In the study, the researchers monitored 1,802 patients at six hospitals who received coronary bypass surgery, in which doctors reroute circulation around a clogged vein or artery. The patients were broken into three groups. Two were prayed for; the third was not. Half the patients who received the prayers were told that they were being prayed for; half were told that they might or might not receive prayers. The researchers asked the members of three congregations — St. Paul's Monastery in St. Paul; the Community of Teresian Carmelites in Worcester, Mass.; and Silent Unity, a Missouri prayer ministry near Kansas City — to deliver the prayers, using the patients' first names and the first initials of their last names. The congregations were told that they could pray in their own ways, but they were instructed to include the phrase, "for a successful surgery with a quick, healthy recovery and no complications." Analyzing complications in the 30 days after the operations, the researchers found no differences between those patients who were prayed for and those who were not. In another of the study's findings, a significantly higher number of the patients who knew that they were being prayed for — 59 percent — suffered complications, compared with 51 percent of those who were uncertain. The authors left open the possibility that this was a chance finding. But they said that being aware of the strangers' prayers also may have caused some of the patients a kind of performance anxiety. "It may have made them uncertain, wondering am I so sick they had to call in their prayer team?" Dr. Bethea said. The study also found that more patients in the uninformed prayer group — 18 percent — suffered major complications, like heart attack or stroke, compared with 13 percent in the group that did not receive prayers. In their report, the researchers suggested that this finding might also be a result of chance. One reason the study was so widely anticipated was that it was led by Dr. Benson, who in his work has emphasized the soothing power of personal prayer and meditation. At least one earlier study found lower complication rates in patients who received intercessory prayers; others found no difference. A 1997 study at the University of New Mexico, involving 40 alcoholics in rehabilitation, found that the men and women who knew they were being prayed for actually fared worse. The new study was rigorously designed to avoid problems like the ones that came up in the earlier studies. But experts said the study could not overcome perhaps the largest obstacle to prayer study: the unknown amount of prayer each person received from friends, families, and congregations around the world who pray daily for the sick and dying. Bob Barth, the spiritual director of Silent Unity, the Missouri prayer ministry, said the findings would not affect the ministry's mission. "A person of faith would say that this study is interesting," Mr. Barth said, "but we've been praying a long time and we've seen prayer work, we know it works, and the research on prayer and spirituality is just getting started."

Anyways, my husband calls me up this morning and says that we can get my Dad a box of baseball cards to make him feel better ( The box costs $105.00 ! ) I said that would be so sweet and thought my husband was being really great and sympathetic towards my Dad - who LOVES collecting cards... So this afternoon he goes right from work to the card store and picks up a box... then he calls me up and says that he bought a box for himself - making 2. I was a little freaked because we really don't have that much in extra money to spend on BB Cards... but my husband is a hard worker so I just dropped it and let him enjoy opening his cards.... Well, about 5 minutes ago he calls me up and I give him a report on my Dad ( he's doing good thank-god! ) and guess what my STUPID husband tells me? About 3 or 4 years ago, she developed a 'hyper active thyroid.' She has been on Tapazole ever since then, and has responded very well to it. She is currently on a dosage of 5 mg, 1/2 a tablet in the morning, and one whole tablet in the evenings. About two months ago I took her for her regular checkup and my vet heard a "gallop" in her heart. We started her on 2.5 mg of Amlodipine, 1/4 of a tablet every three days. Things seemed to be going well, I brought her in a couple of weeks later, and the vet said her heart sounded great, and to keep the treatment going. Two days later, my cat was having very labored breathing and I brought her into an emergency vet clinic. They told me that her lungs were filled with fluid, and that they had to "tap her chest." They were able to successfully remove the fluid, and I took her the next day to see a heart specialist. They did an echocardiogram on her, and even though her heart seemed to look all right, we started to treat her for heart disease. We took her off the Amlodipine and put her on Lasix (12.5 mg, half a tablet twice a day) AND Enalapril (2.5 mg, half a tablet twice a day). She remained on those medications for a few weeks. Meanwhile, every single Friday she was rechecked, and the fluid was always back. We had to continually remove the fluid (through chest taps). Finally, the cardiologist ran some kind of blood work, to look at where her 'heart values' were at. He said that if it was in fact heart disease, that the numbers would be "through the roof." When we got the results back, all of her heart values were fine. We were both surprised. So, then he said it could possibly be "vasculitis?" Something where the vessels in her body were leaking. So, we put her on Prednisone (5 mg, half a tablet twice a day). She was on that for a couple of weeks...still, every Friday like clockwork, the fluid was back. Always around the same amount...no more, no less. In a last ditch effort, thinking maybe it could be some kind of fungus, we have put her on Doxycycline (liquid form, 100 mg/ml...I give her 0.2 mls twice a day). We also know that it is not cancer, because we've run the fluid (from her lungs) on two separate occasions, to check for cancer. And, it keeps coming back clean. The fluid that they keep removing is perfectly clear...not cloudy or straw-like at all. This is what we know right now: It is not heart disease, leaky vessels, fungus, or cancer. She is currently on a half a tablet of Prednisone (twice a day), 0.2 mls of Doxycycline (twice a day), and Tapazole (half a tablet in the morning, whole tablet at night). Other than the fluid in her lungs, she is PERFECTLY fine. She doesn't show any signs of discomfort or pain at all. She is eating and drinking normally, she is playful and affectionate...you would never even know that there is anything wrong. We have tried EVERYTHING that we can think of. The only option left is surgery, where they will open her chest and dig around inside. I am desperately trying to avoid this at all costs, for it is extremely aggressive, and potentially fatal. I am turning to all of you. I am reaching out to the huddled Internet masses, and begging for you to help me.
